Mea Kinda Culpa

I'm an asshole, no doubt, but a fair one, so I hereby commend to you a very praiseworthy post by Glenn Greenwald, a frequent target of derision here, which uses the baby-faced and baby-brained personage of Ezra Klein to point out the lax ethics of the progglesphere.

Greenwald can write. Klein is fresh out of college and looking for some corporate Donkle booty.

I basically think Greenwald is IOZ without the weed. And, like, without the sense of humour.

I think Greenwald is smart, writes well, and I appreciate how he had the time to pay attention to all the things I have no interest in paying attention to. He goes as far as a clever pwoggie seems capable of going in terms of systemic critique, which is the point at which I direct my browser here.

Still, the man may be like a bong rip away from driving 45 in the hammer lane.

Glenn Greenwald went to law school. It takes years to reverse that kind of damage.

No doubt your'e an asshole but I like reading your'e writing.

Bear in mind that Ezra said way back in his Pandagon days that he never even paid attention to politics until 9/11, but a mere six years later, the dude is a Democratic pundit, complete with paying magazine gig and frequent appearences on tv to offer commentary. I don't care how many books you've read, how the hell could anyone think he has enough experience to know fuckall about much of anything?

It's nice to see the sniveling little shit is as bad now as he was back in the Pandagon days.

Klein may be a bong rip away from driving 62 in the hammer lane. If Glenn's excruciatingly clear points confused him to the point they did today, can you imagine him trying to get a handle on IOZ?

Dear Lord Christ Jesus, and then I went and read the actual Ezra Klein thing that Greenwald was responding to: "I'm less than pleased that my civil liberties are being abrogated, but I'm not willing to sell reproductive rights down the river for it."

Ooohhhh my GOD, what must it be like to live inside that kind of mind?

Anonymous said...

The thing about Klein, iirc, is that he's one of those liberals who love love looooves to show the hot lady libs how much he cares about keeping Old Man Government out of their uteruses (uterii?). I imagine its the only way he can get laid.

ms_xeno said...

I don't know why guys like that pretend to care whether or not women can get legal abortions without his help. Isn't that what weekends in Mexico used to be for ?

Reproductive rights are already toast for millions, and have been for year. But to Ezra protecting reproductive rights is the same as sticking your open mouth under a rushing spigot of NARAL money and gulping as fast as you can. Which puts him in good company with the specimens he wants to see in the White House.

Anonymous said...

A lot of people don't understand that candidates who support an imperialist foreign policy or the drug war automatically automatically support restricting civil liberties.

If you do understand this and can somehow just brush it off, then you have misplaced priorities to say the least.

Anonymous said...

I still don't understand why none of these braindead twats can be bothered to come up with a talking point explaining why it's OK for them to support Harry Reid if Ron Paul is so icky.

I also find it hilarious that these braindead twats consider abortion the litmus test of all litmus tests. It's as if they're unaware that people of perfectly good conscience from Nat Hentoff to George Orwell to, like, fucking Gandhi and MLK and every mainline feminist until pretty recently all considered it abhorrent and barbarous.

Meh. It's a slap fight between two pwoggies. What's the fuss? They'll both be pimping Hillary next year anyway.

ms_xeno said...

Yeah, right. [rolleyes]

I don't see how anyone can reconcile the idea of personal freedom with the idea that you can throw a woman in jail for refusing to choose between a lifetime of chastity or giving birth every time her body is capable of conceiving.

A special raspberry to that putz Hentoff. It takes a special woman-loving saint to be pro-porn and pro-life at the same time. I wonder if this means that he has a sexual fetish about pregnant women.

It's disgusting that the progosphere and their overlords treat the concept of reproductive freedom as nothing more than their personal ATM machine. But it doesn't follow that there's something wrong with wanting reproductive freedom.

Modern feminism, the suffrage movement, etc. are completely inextricable from the anti-abortion cause. Susan B. Anthony, for instance, was violently opposed to it and correctly saw it as an instrument of patriarchy.

Nat Hentoff is a better person than you are, by the way, and if you would bother to actually listen to what he has to say on this issue you wouldn't embarrass yourself by calling him a putz.

AlanSmithee said...

Pwoggie dipshits like Hentoff labor under the misapprehension that it's oh-so politically sophisticated to co-opt rightwing social issues. The Clintons are their role models, after all.

As for dumbfucks who cite Susan B. Anthony to support their resentful little faux-feminist pissy pathetic pwoggie positions, all I can recommend is that they go jam an apple and an orange up their ass and see if they can tell the fucking difference.

No. Seriously. Fucking JAM IT, shithead.

ms_xeno said...

Sorry, anon. I guess it's convenient for you that the feminist movement be trapped in amber so you live out whatever misogynist fantasies you hold most dear, but some of us have other ideas. BTW, according to the Guerilla Girls, the Catholic Church at one time was not at all interested in stamping out abortion. See ? Not until 1862. (Sorry that the source they cite is a tad tough to make out.) So I wonder-- does that trump Anthony ? I mean, the Church was there first, right ?

Hentoff can go fuck himself, and you, too for all I care. Libertarians that prattle about personal freedom while they tell women to breed whether we like it or not can just bite me. They are no better than Klein, Marcotte, and their overlords, who eagerly wrap themselves in the pro-choice mantle to make money while they cozy up to Reid, etc. If it were economically feasable, I'd go through my entire collection of jazz LP's and black out everything Hentoff ever wrote. You can fucking have him. He's no friend and no ally of mine.

Hey, Smithee ! A Merry Xmas to YOU, too !! :)

Guess I'm late to the party here, but I agree with IOZ. GG was trying to make a pretty clear point about Paul (whether you'll vote for him or not), namely that it was good to have any fucking candidate talk at all about eroding civil liberties and blowback from imperialist wars. Ezra then went into some insane and largely irrelevant shit fit about it. Kinda weird.

Ignoring the issue of her living in an era where abortion and a whole host of what we now see as routine operations could easily kill or disfigure you, you're going to have to explain to me in small words how abortion is an instrument of the patriarchy.

Ditto Scott.

Yes. And take careful note of the date, and remember what else was going in this country at that time. The newly discovered anti-abortion stance, by the RC Church and others, was prompted in no small part by fears that white people were being out-bred.

Hentoff was a good jazz critic, though.

Libertarianism isn't hedonism. It's a philosophy of accountability. I don't particularly want the state investigating the uterus, but if you don't want to breed, take some accountability and put the dick down.

Compare American abortion law to European abortion law and then think about the fact that our standards are so lax pretty much exclusively thanks to the use of abortion as a political tool by grasping fucks like Klein, the NARAL types, and their douchebag rightwing doppelgangers. Why might that be? It couldn't possibly be that power structures have found it useful to keep morons like you whipped up into a frenzy over the nonexistent possibility of the state forcing you to get pregnant, could it?

Abortion is always a terrible evil, and the vast majority of abortions are had by brutalized women who have them over and over again. If liberals hadn't bizarrely chosen to make this the central issue around which their party is built we could actually address this problem rather than catering to people like you who are so stupid that they end up applauding child murder to show how pure they are ideologically.

child murder

Your inability to distinguish between an embryo and an actual living child tells me all I need to know. Thanks for playing, now fuck off.

ms_xeno said...

...take some accountability and put the dick down...

Why don't we start by having yours put down, along with its owner ?

There are rapists out there. Pills fail and condoms leak. And life-threatening fetal complications don't always conveniently show up neatly during the first ultrasound, assuming one can afford it. A woman who wants ten children can have them, with my blessing. If I get knocked up ten times and need to abort, she should mind her own children and her own fucking business.

Kiss my fat "hedonistic" ass, Anon.

Eric, that's why I don't look at Hentoff's liner notes anymore. It's painful to read thoughtful humane stuff from somebody who you know could look you at you and see nothing but a vague transparent outline with a precious baby machine inside. Woman ? What woman ?

Menopause can't come one day too soon for me. I may have to design some kind of jew-atheist crone's equivalent of the advent calendar.

Are you people really such intellectual lightweights that you find yourself unable to read anything written by someone who thinks abortion is wrong? That has to be the funniest, saddest thing I've heard all week.

scott said...

Anon:

I believe that you can think abortion is wrong in some general sense while also thinking that the whole matter (gee, when is the embryo a person? I dunno, do you?) is so fucking debatable that we shouldn't use the coercive power of the state to deal with it. And I don't want the state either investigating a woman's uterus or telling a man to "put the dick down." Neither is the state's business, and neither should be defended by self-styled libertarians.

the_system said...

A handy list:

1) "Mainline" feminism was until "pretty recently" virulently racist. Amazingly, people can be right about some things and wrong about other things at the same time.

2) Susan B. Anthony's opinion of abortion is no more germane to this discussion than Cleopatra's.

3) It's your dick. You put it away.

4) Routine fucking is a very important part of being a happy, healthy, well-adjusted human being. As such, it isn't so much "hedonism" as "basic civil right."

5) Abortion is certainly undesirable in a general sense. It is not, however, morally significant. Sorry.

6) See what I did right there? You thought I was about to elaborate on the abortion thing and be drawn into a nonsensical argument and then, BAM, Number Six! Just like that!

7) BLAWWWWWWWGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!

ms_xeno said...

The thing is, Anon: For all I know, every reasonably competent jazz critic in the world is anti-choice. Fortunately it's only Hentoff I've actually read shooting off his mouth about it. Oh, and sorry to be such a lightweight, but unlike you, I can grasp the difference between "don't" and "can't" or between"unwilling" and "unable."

I find it more sad than funny that so many men and women on this sorry-ass planet can grasp so readily some inalienable rights but not others. I recommend Silber's treatises on abortion. He's a grouch all right but he can write. Maybe stop by Marisacat's place and read her column on Gerri Santorro. Always a good one.

Oh, and thanks for outing me as somebody who just can't let go of the dick(s). Now everyone here knows that I have to type with my feet and perhaps they can forgive my numerous misspellings more readily.

I personally have loved the shift in Ezra's views on health policy, which started out as: " we need an entirely new universal system based on all this data i've been milling through" (pages and pages of analysis follow); and has now morphed to: "although democratic candidate X's plan might SEEM to go against all that stuff I said a year ago, really it's an awesome awesome plan because... "(pages and pages of rationalization follow).

Don't worry, Ezra, it's all in fun. Ten years from now, when you're head of the Democratic Eavesdropping Committee, I hope you forget all about this anonymous internet criticism.

I will not be surprised

scott said...

cb:

That was the thing that really drove me ape about the whole GG/Ezra smackdown. GG makes a fairly inclusive point that it's good to have any candidate adding a critique of imperialism abroad and authoritarianism at home to the mix, and Ezra flips out. I'm still not sure what lay behind EK's dazzling leaps of illogic in attacking GG for his (nonexistent) endorsement of Paul as a candidate. The more I think about it, though, I agree with you that Ezra has become more of a Democratic establishment hanger-on as time has passed. Perhaps what happened amounts to a favor-currying attack on people who haven't drunk the Kool-Aid of orthodoxy. I agree with cb that it kinda had the ring of the Dem Kewl Kidz blackballing GG for hanging out with that lame Ron Paul. So fucking high school, man.
