I am at worst minarchist libertarian and at best an anarchist, so you'll understand that nothing I'm about to say implies any particular advocacy for Vladimir Putin's Russia. But you know, for most of human history and in most of the world today, people have lived and do live under some or other form of autocracy. Hell, we live under a form of autocracy--I don't think you can reasonably dispute that our country as currently constituted involves a quadrennial or octennial replacement of one dictator with another.
That's not really the point, though. The point is this broad notion, well reflected in the tone of the linked article, that "democracy" is necessarily good, regardless of its outcomes. Of course, Russian democracy under Uncle Boris wasn't pretty, unless you mean pretty awful. It was also questionably democratic in any event. You may recall that Uncle Boris was the one who sent in the tanks. This is not a minor procedural point. Now I, for one, would not want to live under the watchful eye of Czar Vladimir, but it remains unclear to me why either I or the average Russian should be so outraged or disquieted about the marked improvement in almost every aspect of his life.

One could make similar observations viz. Batista/Fidel
...er, not that Batista made much of a pretense of being a democrat.
I know what you're saying but just to point out that I've never made more money in my life or been more happy with my life in general than during the 8 years of Bush the Younger's reign. Judging purely by my life and immediate surroundings, America has never been better.
Writer's in particular should be able to appreciate Putin's odiousness [how I wish for "odiacity" to be a real word.]
Though now that we've apparently got a real game going again there is hope for grass roots change in DC. Sorry, I mean sheet of glass change. I get those confused.
One of the obligations of being a citizen of the American Empire is to have an opinion, recallable at an instant, on how people live in every nook and cranny of the globe.
What's your "position" on Darfur? Or East Timor? Quick - who are the good guys in Serbia v. Kosovo? Or Kurds v. Turkey? Or Basques v. Spain? Don't know? What kind of American are you?
Of course it's our obligation, as good, right-thinking serious Americans to render a judgement on Putin's leadership. The fact that our own country is a cesspool of mismanagement and stupidity doesn't lessen the obligation, either.
Yes, the Russian people are in such a state of desparation under Putin that he's only got an 80% approval rating! What kind of "democracy" is that, I ask you!
And Nader has tossed his hat in (for the US, not Russia) on national teevee! Judging by the outrage across the pwoggosphere, hilarity ensues! THANKSRALPH!11!!
Russia is shaping up to be a lot like China: run by vicious bastards, but at least competent vicious bastards. It's as if "What's good for General Motors is good for America" really was the vision behind a government, except run by former members of the state communist party.

Comment from the Russia English speaking newspaper The Exile:
Indeed, the way that Russia's oligarchs managed to transform their real-life biographies of blood, corruption, savagery and destruction into the perception that they were merely modern-day Rockefellers and normal, pro-Western, forward-thinking, progressive business tycoons is truly one of the more stunning success stories in the history of public relations. The lesson was not lost on the Kremlin, particularly as Putin's biggest foe, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, managed to transform his image in the West from underworld thug to shining liberal dissident more successfully than anyone.
The Exile
The fact that oil is trading at $100/barrel probably has a lot more to do with Putin's popularity than anything else. Although, I suppose that the counter example of Hugo Chavez waning popularity supports the notion that there is at least a basic level of competence required to translate a petro-windfall into continuing political power.
I'll still take the bet that democracy is necessarily good in that it tends toward better outcomes.
I'd just like to see someone actually try it for once.
scats, is that a "no true Scotsman" argument?
not quite.
i said i'd take the bet. not that there's no gamble.
for the record: my ante goes toward direct political and economic democracy only.
we've seen enough republics to get the idea.
Once again, IOZ, you are out of your depths and factually wrong. Uncle Boris led a anti-democratic coup against the expressed desires of his former constituents to banish economic nationalism and install the kleptocracy of the Washington Consensus, except the kleptocrats were home-grown and not the usual multinational suspects.
As I suggested previously, drop back ten yards and punt.
I agree with Ashley, my life is better under Bush, but I think it has more to do with my age and choice of profession than what he's done for me.
It's not "if I am better off now versus 8 years ago?" It's where I see things going 8 years from now and how much of that is the current admin's doing.
The road ahead doesn't quite look like Cormac's, but then again it ain't that far off either.
I wonder who our new anonymous is. His epistemology interests me. "Restatement is correction." Quel idée!
