Out of this Furnace

By embracing market economics while preserving the party’s monopoly on power and restricting political freedom, Mr. Pan writes, China’s Communist leaders have concocted an “authoritarian capitalism” that “could be as exploitative as anything Marx — or Mao — ever envisioned.” Free markets and private enterprise, he says, “generated wealth and prosperity, but unrestrained by democratic institutions, they also produced grim work conditions”: without trade unions, a free press, independent courts or elections, workers have little leverage with their employers and no way to remove corrupt officials, who often collude with business interests.

-La Kakutani reviewing Out of Mao's Shadow
Wow. Yeah. Those wily Chinese sure have come up with a unique system of state capital. Unprecedented.

Did I miss something in my political theory class in college? I think it should read:

"could be as exploitative as anything Strauss - or Kissinger - ever envisioned."

Yes. Much better.

Capital idea, by Jove!

anonymous, surely we should take it a step further and make these other substitutions:

party's ---> parties'

China's Communist leaders ---> America's fascist oligarchs

Um... wouldn't "Authoritarian Capitalism" be exactly what Karl envisioned when he thought of a particularly oppressive society?

I've not read the man, but I kind of thought that was his whole point.

This is some pretty awful writing you've found here, Mssr. Ioz:

After Mao’s death, in 1976, things began to change, but the party has refused to permit a soul-searching national discussion to take place about Tiananmen Square or the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Pan says, because it is fearful of the emotions that such discussions might unleash and “the lessons that might be drawn about the wisdom of one-party rule.”

Um, what? What the fuck is a "soul-searching national discussion"?

Weren't we supposed to have one of those about racism a while back? How'd that go?

What is this? It's like democracy porn or something.

I wonder when WE are going to have a soul-searching discussion of why we keep murdering hundreds of thousands of people while "enlightening" and "liberating" our victims?

Christopher -

I had interpreted Ms. Kakutani's comments to mean that she thought that specifically Marx (and Mao) was actually the one who wanted the exploitation. Not that they were just describing it as the "height" of capitalist development. But perhaps I misread it - so point taken.

How do you say 'Guilded Age' in Chinese?

is it me ("for a moment"?), or, does the photo of Pittsburgh keep getting trippier?

not at all like the city portrayed in "WonderBoys".

while the comments are groovier than ever, the chick view seems grossly underrepresented. (not counting "anon" donations.) where are "la rana", "ash", and, my personal fave, "erin4iraq"?

I've tried to read the book and found it unreadable...China weird under Mao, then awful, then he died and things not so awful until Tienanmen, then really awful and now better...if there isn't a war or the environment doesn't kill everybody.

Actually, it's sort of like everything I've read about China and everything I've been told about China by people who would talk to me about China who were in China or had been to China.

Got it. And, when the Chinese can build anything that can pass a European or American crash test, they'll kill GM. Which, despite the likelihood of having your next car be a Maple or a Goolie or some other nonsensical awful thing, is probably not a bad thing to have happen. Actually, the Chinese will just buy GM...

Ronald: As a Vaginamerican I love IOZ's blog. The problem is I agree with probably 90% of what he says so there's not much for me to say unless I have a rare need to spout off on my own. But usually some perverted commentator as already wrote what I was thinking anyway.

Christopher: I'm going to go ahead and steal the phrase "democracy porn," thanks.
