Dog Years

Any Democrat would be at least marginally better than John McCain and Republican hegemony so I'm not particularly moved by the question of whether we are being led by a savior or a disappointment at this point. I just want to ensure that we don't have another psycho running things. I am interested in whether this nascent progressive movement can actually coalesce into something meaningful by gathering enough political power and cultural heft to actually do something. At this point I have no earthly idea if that will happen but I'm fascinated by the prospect.

Vote Obama: He's None of the Things You Want! Tammy Wynette, eatcherhardout.

"This whole exercise testifies to what Lenin called 'an infantile disorder' of the American left," writes Pat Buchanan with delicious irony. I can only imagine his grin as he penned that citation for the pages of Mother Jones. For the past eight or so years, online progressives have remained in the blastocyst stage of development, unquickened and unensouled. Eight years of organizing and no movement? These, keep in mind, are the folks who drive by little ol' IOZ screaming that we are navel-gazing self-involved nihilistic narcissists who do and have done nothing to make the world a better place. At least this narcissist never claimed to be otherwise. Truth in advertising, motherfuckers.

apparently they 'commiserate' better or something.

Ah yes, "commiseration". The daft cunts amount to no better than a massive support group for shell-shocked liberals. Pathetic, the lot of them.

This comment from Digby's weepie ward is illustrative of the underlying failing of that whole bunch:

" Thanks for putting into such thoughful words what I've been thinking but couldn't articulate a fraction as well.

These people think Digby is SMART.

Ah, but Obama's the perfect figure for the Digby sort of Democrat.

Whenever Obama does anything patently un-"progressive", they pat themselves on the back two times.

The first time, it's because "they always knew he was going to do that".

The second time, it's because they get to condemn those who "can't get with the program".

Well, maybe, if Obama has any kind of "legacy" -- it will be that his blatant contempt for what the Pwoggies think about him finally convinced them to stop using that damn "most-important-election-ever-™-in-our-entire-lifetimes-®- this-time-we-really-mean-it-" meme. It seems to have had that effect on Digby.

Off topic but perhaps worthy of IOZ comment: Hammer of the Blogs says that Barak could pacify the dead-end Hillary supporters by nominating Hillary for the next Supreme Court Justice. I agree, but for different reasons.

The last two sentences in the quoted paragraph deserve every ounce of derision that you cast upon them. The first two sentences, not so much. You feel, correctly, I think, that the U.S. is in the process of a long term decline in terms of economic (and hence ultimately military) power, and in many respects you welcome that. I agree on both counts. The big question IMO is whether we are going to go out with an apocalyptic bang or a whimper. McCain is, aside from perhaps Guilliani, the one politician of both parties most likely to lead us down the former course. He is quite capable of starting a nuclear war with Iran or Russia, or, hell, maybe Pakistan. Obama will likely do all sorts of nasty things on the world stage, and I could see him blundering into such a conflict, but he lacks the madman's gleam that is all to apparent in McCain's eyes.

My favorite comes from PM Carpenter:

[P]rogressives should get off Obama's back. He is, ... "simply doing what it takes to win." Progressives should follow suit and swallow their vocal idealism ... until the prize is won. Then they can hammer him leftward -- although he's already there and is only trying to strategically hide it as best he can.

I hope Obama wins just to see how well a radical Marxian redistribution of "The Pie" goes over. (Talk about going out with an apocalyptic bang.)

montag, where's my pie?

The Republicans keep saying, "No pie for you!" The Democrats promise me pie, but at some vague date in the future. They also tell me America is not ready for pie, and that I have to lower my expectations to a picture of pie. Then they tell me they don't know what pie looks like.

There's a reason why the average IQ is 100 and not 130.

The pie is a lie.

OK. But what about the pony?

Yes. I too have been called a "troll," a "racist," a "Republican plant," and, as Ioz put it, a "navel-gazing self-involved nihilistic narcissist," simply for pointing out that Obama has taken a massive dump on the Constitution. Oh well . . .

Hey, even IOZ, way back in the beginning of this here blog, said something to the effect of Digby being brilliant at least once. Did you just have much better weed back in early '06 or what, dude?

kali yuga,

Yep, me too. Also got called a "concern troll", whatever that is.

Not that I would want to defend American liberals, but I am tired of the 'at least I'm honest about being a prick' argument, as if that means anything... The serial rapist never claimed to be otherwise. Let's give him some credit.

Oh, that happens every time. Just wait another four years and all will be forgotten. Again. It's like there's some strange form of amnesia which is triggered by presidential elections.

Actually, make that two years, and any elections. My mistake.

They're so hung up on the winning that they can't bear to admit that it doesn't mean anything.

Bouncing up and down on election day while squealing "we win!" seems to be the ultimate pwoggie goal this time around.

But what am I saying? It's the pwoggie goal every time around.
