Gleiwitz délivré

At the high point of the Jeremiah Wright imbroglio, I was chatting with a friend who largely shares my sympathies for passive radicalism, but as we talked about the truths behind the Rev's critique of the imperium, I found myself defending his contention that the US government introduced crack and HIV into the urban community. These are accusations that even the most staunchly anti-imperial political radicals generally eschew as being somehow beyond the pale, existing in the realm of pure paranoia and fantasy. On the merits of evidence, I endorse neither, but this notion that these kinds of conspiracies are categorically impossible is the real fantasy. The government that brought you the Tuskegee experiments and that deliberately dosed its own soldiers with LSD for days and weeks at a time is capable of plenty of skulduggery, and the government that will kill a million Vietnamese or displace 4 million Iraqis from their homes can hardly be defended with the line "well, they wouldn't do that . . ."

As for this anthrax shit and our friend Thoreau's willingness to embrace the distinct possibility that the gunman wasn't necessarily working alone, I raise a cloudy glass. We are ruled by people who would use a false flag operation straight out of the 1939 playbook, so let's never preemptively conclude that there are some lines they just wouldn't transgress.

There's an incredibly funny cult movie called "Whiffs" that talks to the use of LSD on troops, the Stangelovian concept of "We don't want to kill the enemy, we just want to make them a little sick..." Haven't seen it on cable or DVD, but worth looking at. In addition to being funny and a good satirical view of the amorality of institutions, there are some frightening aspects of it.

I had the same thought almost immediately when Sy Hersch's story about the SEAL/Iranian PT boats thing hit the news. The cold-blooded attack on Germany by Poland in 1939...I used to have an entirely too smart Tonkinese Male named Brendan, and an incredibly dumb Irish Setter puppy named Rory. Brendan would let the woofwoofwoofin puppy back him into a corner and then look at me as if to say, "It's not my fault, I'm in danger here, I must defend myself..." He would then knock the puppy senseless, but never use his claws...so, our government, our Vice President...less moral than a Tonkinese Cat.

You know, I always thought the crack/Aids nonsense was nonsense. However, given the mindsets in power over the last 50 years or so, well, you may be on to something. Eddie Albert played the entirely too kind sort of villain in Whiffs, and I gotta say, he was terrifying. Kind of a WASP version of Alberto Gonzales with a Ivy-Leaguer haircut...

Just a little reminder:

America's 'crack' plague
has roots in Nicaragua war
Colombia-San Francisco Bay Area drug pipeline
helped finance CIA-backed Contras
Published: Aug. 18, 1996

BY GARY WEBB
Mercury News Staff Writer

FOR THE BETTER PART of a decade, a San Francisco Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to the Crips and Bloods street gangs of Los Angeles and funneled millions in drug profits to a Latin American guerrilla army run by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, a Mercury News investigation has found.

This drug network opened the first pipeline between Colombia's cocaine cartels and the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a city now known as the "crack'' capital of the world. The cocaine that flooded in helped spark a crack explosion in urban America … and provided the cash and connections needed for L.A.'s gangs to buy automatic weapons.

It is one of the most bizarre alliances in modern history: the union of a U.S.-backed army attempting to overthrow a revolutionary socialist government and the Uzi-toting "gangstas'' of Compton and South-Central Los Angeles.

I knew someone here would beat me to mentioning the late Gary Webb's investigations.
Smartest people I read stop by here.
"As for this anthrax shit", Eric Lichtblau of the Times was asked about GG's reporting on CSPN this morning and sniffed how this theory was old and had been fairly well debunked.
By whom, exactly, he never did say.
Am reading an interesting tome about the 1918 influenza outbreak; and Woodrow Wilson's conscription of all able-bodied American males between eighteen and fourty-five, along with his shitting all over the Constitution. And he's a Lib fave.
So, yeah, I suppose THEY could, and would, do that if they felt protecting our vital national interests called for such drastic measures.

i don't doubt the government's capacity to construct immensely complicated batshit insane plans, but i do doubt it's ability to execute complex tasks. 9/11, the AIDS epidemic -- conspiring to commit these acts (and then actually succeeding) seems well beyond the skill level of a government mostly controlled by senile grifters.

however, sending out a few letters laced with a chemical agent the government possesses in abundance... doesn't sound too complex.

It's synergy Sunday here. I was thinking that anthrax is taking a page out of the crack story playbook: from "never happened" to "resolved/debunked" without ever passing through that intermediary stage where evidence is aired and considered.

Seriously, two weeks ago, anthrax was still in the memory hole and the prez was all, "there hasn't been an act of domestic terrorism since 9/11" and shit. Now, some guy nobody's heard of dies, and the case is closed.

/RIP, Gary Webb.

Huh. I thought that AIDS was developed by the CIA to get rid of homosexuals. This belief was fairly common coin among gay men in the 80s; I reviewed two books for Gay Community News which took it for granted. I noticed too that this 'theory' coexisted (often among the same people) with the belief that AIDS was a spiritual manifestation of the hate of bigots, and also a symptom of gay men's own spiritual malaise. So you had hucksters like Chris Griscom and Marianne Williamson (there was one other famous one, I'm drawing a blank on her name) making money off us, telling PWAs that they could heal themselves if they'd visualize wholeness and get rid of their self-hate.

I'm not one to romanticize the black church either. Try reading Cathy Cohen's "The Boundaries of Blackness" for a chilling account of how African-American Christian leaders tried to blame AIDS on perverts and drug addicts -- very Reagan-like -- and did virtually nothing to serve the PWAs in their community until they were shamed into half-assed action by mostly white AIDS activists. Things have improved, I gather, but not much. The government-plot theory also circulated among African-Americans in the 80s, but I wonder if its popularity now is a symptom of guilt among black church leaders who hoped they could ride out the epidemic by waiting until all the perverts and addicts had died.

Jeremiah Wright also apparently retails scientific-racist theories about different left-brain / right-brain organization in black vs. white children. If he has a somewhat better better understanding of American imperial violence than Pat Robertson, it's not because of any great wisdom or virtue on his part; it's because that knowledge is easily available in his milieu.

Jeremiah Wright was and is progressive on gay issues, so he doesn't have that particular flaw of some in the black church. He is given to silly theories about the brain, I gather.

On the HIV thing, I'm no expert, but my understanding is that the scientific community wouldn't have had the expertise to develop that virus when it first appeared. So one can be open-minded and paranoid about government conspiracies and still dismiss that one on scientific grounds. Though again, I'm not an expert.

more on the anthrax stuff from Glenn Greenwald:

http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/01/anthrax/index.html

lots of unanswered questions - including who was the anonymous sources to ABC News who linked this directly to Iraq (or tried to do so)?

whoever they were, they came from Ft. Detrick, as did the anthrax

and insiders at the White House were also celebrating the imaginary link to Iraq:

{blawgwhoring} Hey, I cited several other examples of this phenomenon on my own website three years ago!

What period of time was it, exactly -- what days can you point me towards on the calendar -- where these stories were "NEW NEWS"? Is it possible for news just to sublimate magically from "FRINGE CRACKPOT THEORY" into "OLD HAT" without passing through a period when it's a legitimate news story? Because that's what seems to be happening, more and more lately.

...Other examples of "OLD NEWS" that have induced yawns from the chattering pundit classes over the past few years, when they suddenly and unexpectedly broke the light of day, have included:

* California Energy Crisis
{citation}
* Iraq WMD
{citation}
* Bush vs. Kerry Service Records
