Shoplifters of the World

I am traveling with family for the holiday and posting will be lizzite. Let me just say though, from the 18th floor of a rather chi-chi hotel in the middle of the city Michael Savage affectionately dubs San Fran Sicko: for mere inhabitants of a socialist workers' paradise, these fucking hippies sure do seem to have this capitalism thing down to a damn science. Dad and I were cracking up at the Ferry Building. "Look," he said, "bread lines!"

It's eerie... it's almost as if Capitalism works better somehow, when it's strangled by all those regulations and restrictions and taxes and environmental awareness crap. But we all know that can't be true, so it must be for some other reason.

Damn pinko Californians are leeching money off of fine upstanding moose hunters in Alaska somehow, I just know it...

Believe me, San Francisco's reputation as a hotbed of leftist ferment is ridiculously overblown. There's a relatively strong left contingent here in relative terms, I suppose, but it's dwarfed by a veritable army of entitled, insufferable, Lexus-driving, party-line Democrats.

The Ferry Building is fine so far as it goes, but don't miss the Marin headlands (just over the Golden Gate Bridge). And one of my favorite spots is Queen Wilhelmina garden, on JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park just before you get to the ocean...from which it's just a short stroll to Land's End, Sutro Baths, and Sutro Heights Park (yet more favorites).

Have fun!

If "San Francisco" as a symbol of Gay excess and the Counterculture didn't exist, the Religious Right would have to invent it..
Oh, wait, they did.
'Cause it's soo useful for my
Fundie relatives to go off about San Francisco. They can act like Nancy Pelosi is some kind of liberal...
When I said "mom, you know that the Assemblies of God" (their brand of Religious Rightery) "has a number of congregations in San Francisco and the Bay area" she said 'Yes, I just don't know how they stand it.."
You have to foster ignorance and bigotry, and as a culture, we have.

As a Picksburgher who boomeranged via SF, let me just say, have the time of your life. In addition to the Marin Headlands & Golden Gate Park (a day for each if you're to do them justice) a looong and useful walk is from the Ferry Building west along the marina to Fort Mason and that big orangish bridge thingy up and around the Presidio to Ocean beach. Hot dogs at Franks (up the hill from the Cliff House) and then back down behind the CH to the Musee Mechanique, a unique treat. End up at either The Beach House for some decent food and microbrew or walk back up past Franks along Geary until you reach The Pacific Cafe, where you'll get free wine while you wait for an hour or so for a table, which sounds ridiculous, but in the end you'll understand why. Mmmmmm. Enjoy.

No, they are the default. It is their absence that requires work.

Ah, the old Hobbes vs Locke argument... Always good to see a classic.

Ahhhh. Michael "Savage." I love that his real name is "Wiener" What a mess of infantilized reactionary gobbleydegook.

I'm awaiting Inkberrow to arrive and inform us that if we don't love The Thavage One, we are somehow all pedophiles or something.

Enjoy yourself, Ioz. There is good wine north of the City, too!

hi others have given all the touristie spots suggestion . i will give you closest to skid row in a very san francisco style . walk by Tenderloin area . bracketed between market / mason / ellis / larkin-hyde .
and do it day time at least first time :)
if you head to hippie hill ( in GG Park ) / haight you may still run into some old hippies though most have settled into comfortable middle class lives .
hopefully you get to smoke a good bong !\. or two before you leave !

Its raining today, so I would go to Tosca in North Beach after sampling the gnocchi and brunello and grappa at North Beach restaurant.

You guys? It's really sweet how you're giving IOZ advice about visiting tourist traps, but, he's gay and he's with family; I'm fairly certain he's been to San Francisco before.

craigslist's m4m in sf is filled with options

Actually we were (well, I was) giving him advice about avoiding tourist traps and finding the good stuff. And with a few exceptions, spending time at the Ferry Building isn't a sign that someone is familiar with SF.

Heh. Likewise "Hey, seems like there's a lot of money here! Wow, financial capital of the West Coast - who knew?"

There's some tasty bread in that Ferry Building - some great Vietnamese food too.
