Prey

Just in time for the feast of Sol Invictus, American sun god Barack Obama has declared that megapriest Rick Warren will deliver the hocus-pocus at his coronation. I doubt we'll have to look very hard for the hilariously predictable outrage. It occurs to La Digs, again, that to the Democratic party, Progressives are a reliable voting bloc whose pet concerns can be winked at and discarded. Forever. Remember: Progressives are the audience for Whatsammatta wit Kanzis. Oh, do they ever wonder how the poor hicks of the heartland can forever give their affirmation to a political party that doesn't actually give one shit about them! How mysterious is the human heart! How unusual the mind!

Of course, Barack Obama knows, and Joe Biden knows, and Nancy P. and Harry R. know, that if Barry O. dons the scarlet robes of an emperor and has himself crowned Grand Moff of the Universe by the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and the Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Progressives will still come out for the party, before returning to their blurgs to murmur darkly about the traitorous thanksralphery of "purists," whose uncompromising un-commitment to lesser-evilism makes them an eternal target of proggie ire. "The perfect," they cry, "is the enemy of the good." True. But so is the bad. The problem with the Democratic Party is not forgivable imperfection. The problem is that the Democratic Party is evil, vicious, and wrong. Is Rick Warren a vacuous moral apologist for American exceptionalism? Yes! The word for his selection is: appropriate.

how can you possibly make such a judgment when it isn't even january 20th yet? obama hasn't officially done anything as president yet.

Well I for one think it is a positive development that our president-elect is moving to get beyond all the partisan rancor. This country desperately needs to come together at a dark moment in our history. We need to be comfortable agreeing to disagree with each other.

I am very much looking forward to Noam Chomsky's selection as special middle east envoy.

Yeah IOZ! You can't tell anything about Emperor Obama by what he does before he's officially Emperor! That's just not cricket, old chap! Harrumph! Harrumph!

Yes, but it's all good! Joseph Lowery's balancing it all out by giving the benediction! See - big tent/bipartisanshipalizal symmetry at its finest!

Or was it Rich Lowry? Or maybe Joe the Plumber? Or...

UR DOIN IT RONG WITH UR MOCKERYZ:
The Inauguration will also involve Reverend Joseph Lowery, who will be delivering the official benediction at the Inauguration. Reverend Lowery is a giant of the civil rights movement who boasts a proudly progressive record on LGBT issues. He has been a leader in the struggle for civil rights for all Americans, gay or straight.

See? Not just a homo, but a giant homo. IN UR MOVEMENT, STRUGLIN 4 UR CIVIL RITEZZZZ.

Maybe instead of holding Obama's feet to the fire on his ceremonial performances, we should do it on his actual policies?

I'd trade a whole lot of Sista Soulja moments for some good left-wing policy, should it be forthcoming.

Of course, this is all according to Obama's supersekrit master plan, which ordinary people like you and I are simply too obtuse to understand....

obama's presidency is like Schrödinger's cat. we won't know until we open the box whether it contains hope and change, or a dead cat.

this is remarkable. just like during the election, you idiots are projecting what you want to be there onto the man. come, come back to reality.

The next four years are going to be an amazing run for this blog, my friends. Personally, I think Obama's presidency is more like Zeno's arrow--a paradox, until you think about it.

I just don't understand religion at all. What does it say about us that a featherweight goofball like Rick Warren is one of the country's greatest spiritual leaders?

What the hell is wrong with us?

Watching that video on digby's site, where Rick goes on and on saying things about the history of marriage that are just not true, reminded me of the pastor at my mother's church.

She wanted me to come see their production of "A Christmas Carol" and even though I hate church, I go at Christmas to make my mother happy. Anyway, there was a service afterwards, and the pastor was going on about how all other religions are about desperately trying to curry the favor of the gods, unlike Christianity. I thought to myself, "A lot of Buddhists would be surprised to hear that."

I don't understand why people will sit there and listen as their Pastor says things that are manipulative, self-serving and outright wrong, and still think of him as a wise man.

What's more, my mother and brother thought the play was lame, whereas I thought it was pretty good for an amateur production put on by a church.

I just don't understand religion at all.

I hate to parade on the rain, but you need to think about good cop/bad cop. Obama isn't wooing Warren, he's after the persuadables who bought his book. Of course, maybe you're playing a deeper game. "Why are you being nice to this guilty bastard?" Slams table, storms out of interview room. In which case, never mind, carry on.

I can't believe that I'm the first to point out that The Emperor wore black robes, and the scarlet robes were worn by the Imperial Royal Guard.

Honestly, I don't know what the Internet is coming to...

Look... Obama is not a sun god. He is the Sun President, in the same way that Louis XIV was the Sun King. You are going to piss off Helios with talk like that, and then what will become of our poor country? I'll tell you what -- then we'll all wind up huddled in the dark listening to guys like Rick Warren preach sermons about the evils of the ghey, that's what!

But really, with respect to the Sun President and the obligatory religious pomp at his swearing-in, what I really want to know is this: What Would Machiavelli Do? Or, more precisely, What Would Machiavelli Advise The Sun President To Do?

Megapriest? You are obviously a kinder, gentler human being than I am. I have always thought of Rick Warren as a pastor-hyphen-entrepreneur. Of course I have also thought of him as a fat, greasy snake oil salesman, but that is of no relevance to your choice of epithet.

Obama has never intended to represent change from evil to good, or even from evil to less evil. His promise is to move from incompetently implemented evil to competently implemented evil.
