Although I find the President's policies mostly occupying the range from horrific to merely ridiculous, I mostly find myself amused by people who can't read opinion polls and have this notion that Barack Obama is somehow foundering right now. Dude is popular! I mean, I'm all about shouting "Fuck you, preppies!" at his passing entourage, but I'm still sitting on the steps with the stoners.
As Roy notes and notes and notes, it's almost impossible to actually decode Camille Paglia's nightingale warbling. What we gather is that once-considered-extinct North-American megafauna Rush Limbaugh is to be left alone, likewise his poor, benighted following of morons, losers, and the fascistically nostalgic legions of the pre-deceased. And yes, I suppose it's possible to make the argument that since Rush looks like a fat-swaddled blind baby mammal, a thing whose natural posture is on its back, useless little paws flapping at the sky, hairless, wrinkled body still sickly-gray, he should be accorded the same noo-noo-naa-naa cooing protection.
But while the asinine media yapsters wring their hands with extravagantly insincere regret that Obama is squandering . . . something . . . on darts thrown at the Jello Mold of the airwaves, Obama surely notes that he can use Rush effectively as a proxy to keep his putative opponents from making any kind of counterargument on the airwaves, and all he risks (which is nothing at all) is earning the greater opprobrium of people who already despise him. You wouldn't know it to watch the news, but Barack Obama keeps getting what he wants; his bills keep passing.
Interestingly, Obama's liberal-progressive supporters, who were so horrified when they learned of Bush partisans making statements to the effect that 9-11 provided a golden opportunity for the enacting of long-sought policies, are now aping the same line regarding the crisis in the economy.

dude is really fucking popular in some circles.
I try not to notice such trivialities, but I can hardly help myself. So many elites have that same look - fat, pink, bald, probably glasses, fleshy hands that are still as smooth as the day they were born. Something about the things they say coming out of bodies like that kicks off a heightened level of revulsion, pigs being the animals that are more equal than others.
"...fascistically nostalgic legions of the pre-deceased."
BWA!

"Never trust a man whose ass is wider than his shoulders." - Terry Funk
Paglia, of course, is the woman who said this of Sarah Palin:
"So she doesn't speak the King's English -- big whoop! There is a powerful clarity of consciousness in her eyes. She uses language with the jumps, breaks and rippling momentum of a be-bop saxophonist."
And
"I am very sorry that [Dick Cavett] and so many other members of the educational elite, cannot take pleasure as I do in the quick, sometimes jagged, but always exuberant way that Palin speaks -- which is closer to street rapping than to the smug bourgeois cadences of the affluent professional class."
Which together make up what is to this day the most stunning piece of utter bullshit I have ever heard.
Why does she even have a job?
Why does she even have a job? Well, she got tenure at a small college back in the days when tenure was still easy to get. As for her media prominence, a woman who'll bash feminism in the name of feminism can always get a corporate media gig. Contrarian, doncha know.
The Promiscuous Reader,
that may explain why she is loved by the mainstream media, but why does Joan Walsh stubbornly insist on letting her pollute that liberal democrat with right-wing, Republican talking-points and propaganda cleverly disguised as "contrarianism" ? I think that has more to do with Joan Walsh and her knee-jerk "feminist" defense of all womynkind. Joan Walsh seems to relish giving a big fuck-you to Salon readers, most of whom can't stand Camille Paglia and her awful, rambling, incoherent and completely incorrect ramblings that Joan Walsh regularly publishes.
missed a few words in the post above:
"..why does Joan Walsh stubbornly insist on letting her pollute that liberal democrat rag, Salon.com, with right-wing..."
