The Wise Mister Smith brings us some proggie barnacles scraped from the bottom of the leviathan. Haven't we been saying for years now that the Donk isn't anti-war, but anti-one-particular-war-when-conducted-by-one-particular-dude? Such slow-moving creatures, but they do give a man whiplash, don't they?
Papa IOZ, gaudy old capitalist that he is, said of managing staffs and boards of directors: the more they think you're their man, the more they're yours.

After yesterday's committee meeting, where I moved a bunch of stuff through, I couldn't agree with you more.
They have a handler in place for me, and that convinced them that I'm their man. I'm not going to rock the boat in a way that would disabuse them of that notion (I'm not tenured) but I am going to get some crap done (and let them think they made the right call in putting me there to do it).
come on, IOZ, you know Smokey has emotional problems.
Just one of those mysteries.
I don't get it.
A bunch of Skinnies in Boston whalers can terrorize an entire shipping lane, and we can't free one captive captain in a floating bubble?
(Your barnacles reference got me thinking about this.)
I did learn that UFPJ is a bunch of ex-Communists!?
I thought they were all deported during the 50's?
Prof. Obvious
Obama is smart enough to know that we have a Deep Government which assassinates Presidents and Senators whenever it pleases; and will mail anthrax to anyone it wants to. So what Obama "wants" to do and what he knows his "orders" are may be two different things.
I voted Obama to spare myself the ordeal of President Palin. I don't regret my choice. People should focus on what the Obama interlude allows people themselves to do with the next couple of years. Ran Prier says the same thing better than I could.
"April 9. There's lots of buzz about Obama and I disagree with all of it. Jon Stewart had a great reply to the right wingers the other night: this isn't "tyranny" -- you lost, and it's normal, when you lose an election, for the government to do things you don't like. Then there are the foilheads, who will be crying "police-state-new-world-order" even if they die and go to heaven, because it's the only song they know. Then there are the lefties, who are correct in the details but simple-minded in the big picture. Biologically, we want to think of the President as the Chief of a tribe where everything is simple and transparent, when in reality he's like a figurehead/technician of a massive system with unimaginable complexity and inertia, and almost all of it hidden from public view. It's funny how so many people will abandon their trust in an individual, believing that Obama is stupid or evil, before they'll abandon their trust in the government, that it's so well-designed that it could be radically changed if only an intelligent and benevolent person became president, or before they'll abandon their trust in the media, that they show us everything.
Obama is playing a chess game in which we can't see most of the pieces. If he backs his queen off for no apparent reason, the fool says, "I could play better than that," while the wise person tries to infer the position of the hidden rook. From his policy decisions so far, I infer an army of strong pieces whose motive is to continue the American cult suicide. Every powerful interest is going to hold onto its power at the expense of the whole system, which will continue to decline and fall... as we continue to build new systems in its cracks. What Obama gives us, at the very least, is a few years of relative stability. He's going to keep the bus from flipping over or bursting into flames as it rolls down the slope.
Who I fear is the next president. This article argues that the current policy mix reflects those of Germany during the period between 1919 and 1923, the famous Weimar period that fueled Hitler. Americans are going to get angry and desperate, and the great danger is that someone will appear with Obama's charisma and appeal to the youth, but where Obama is an empiricist and a negotiator, this leader will be an ideologue and a fanatical crusader. Then we'll get our piles of skulls."
And remember, the Underground Fourth Reich has been working very patiently to bring America to its rendezvous with Weimar. So people might be thinking about how to "counter-Weimarize" their part of society and economy.
Dear IOZ,
This young man's arguments against gay marriage deserve your sober arguments.

RU Reddy,
your sincerity is showing
Ah yes, how many times I've heard that over the years, RU Reddy: The President knows more than we do, so we should shut up and let him govern. I heard it during the Vietnam War, and again and again until I heard it during Gulf War II. It was false every time.
You claim that we can't see all the pieces in the game; but you talk as though you can. Perhaps the question, such as it is, is whether Obama is the prisoner of the "Fourth Reich" special interests (child! American imperialism predates the Third Reich -- get yourself up to speed), or sold himself to them willingly long ago. The latter is my guess.
