Apostasy

"Too Soon To Say If Afghan Plan Working." You can say that again. The West has been trying to do . . . something or other in Afghanistan since Alexander. What did Zhou Enlai say about the French Revolution? In the meantime, from my perspective in the near provinces of the New Rome, the twenty-first century is seriously starting to resemble the latter end of the fourth. I suppose that makes Barack Obama Julian or something.

National Security Advisor General James Jones says the Obama administration should know within a year whether its new strategy for Afghanistan will be successful.Remember, we did Iraq on the six-month Friedman-unit installment plan. Now Jones wants a year, which must make Friedman feel quite small, because his unit is only half as big as Jones'.

Bwa! That would make Gen. McChrystal the Servius Fidenas of the new millennium. Now all we need to do is finish the Servian Wall on the Mexican border.

But as you've pointed out many times, Obama is anything but apostate from the cult of the American empire. Maybe he'd be better cast as Akhenaten.

That doesn't make as good a movie, unfortunately.

Julian wasn't Apostate from Rome. He just made a lot of holy noises about restoring the old gods and such. You know what'um sayin?

I read a book on the fall of Rome recently, and I found some of the parts about Roman relations with their client states strangely familiar.

And I've always thought they should make a movie about Julian.

Julian was a loyal supporter of the "Rome as Universal Empire" project; he just thought Ares brandishing a sword was a better brand identifier than Jewish carpenter being meekly tortured to death. With hand sight, we know he was wrong.
