Je n'accuse pas

One of my spies suggests that I ought to start picking at Bayrubeay again because he called me a spoiled little rich girl. Haha, jealous! I only wish to correct the record. I stand accused of having a passing crush on Ron Paul. Not true! I defended Ron Paul, but I had a crush on Mike Gravel, and the only candidate I endorsed was dead communist, Gus Hall.

Anonymous said...: Oh, and Prof. - I believe the "bad odor" you're held in around here has to do with the fact that you responded to IOZ insulting Digby a couple years ago by revealing that his father was a hospital CEO, a fact which I, a regular reader, was unaware of at that time (which would seem to indicate that it really wasn't anybody else's business). Not that it seemed to bother him, as he's joked about it many times since, but still, spilling personal info that had nothing to do with anything? I believe that's what experts in the field call a "dick move".

To be fair to him, Christopher, I believe he's saying Herman is the genocide-denier, whereas Chomsky is simply guilty of quibbling over what Milosevic knew and when he knew it, a fact that he himself clearly said did not detract from the crimes he committed. And at least Berube has yet to turn into a raving clown at the mention of Chomsky's name, like that jackass at the Poor Man.; 2:39 PM

As for genocide denial, Christopher, yes, it's Ed Herman's work with the "Srebrenica Research Group" I'm referring to. Really vile stuff -- practically birther quality material. Check it out when you're all grown up!

As for my "dick move": I only knew about Monsieur Ioz's background because he mentioned it on a "blog." I didn't think it was privileged information. As for Ioz's criticisms of Digby, I remain amused by people who get more upset with "pwogs" who aren't Dem shills than with liberals who are. And the real reason I'm in bad odor around here, as I recall, was that June 2006 post on Chomsky misrepresenting the findings of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation and claiming that Milosevic was "horrified" to learn about Srebrenica. I still don't understand why that one caused such a fuss, or why one can't say that Chomsky's work on Central America in the 80s was a thing of beauty but his stuff on the Balkans is not. I am, indeed, an idiot when it comes to such things.

Cüneyt said...: You know, I read that whole "horrified" bit not as saying that Milosevic was all "but what about those poor Muslims!" after Srebrenica, but that it was something that was spontaneous and didn't occur under his watch. A thing that would horrify an authoritarian, don't you think? But, as Perrin said, we have no idea what he thought, and the Americans, it may be argued, have not a leg to stand on when it comes to accusing others of mass murder on dubious grounds. That goes for liberals too.

Two things. First, Christopher M., it is almost never possible to discuss the hazy details of this or that atrocity without being accused of genocide denial. The reason for this is because all but the most ridiculous genocide deniers employ just that line: all the facts aren't in, let's hear all sides of the story, and so on. The difference you point out does exist, but it's a largely theoretical one. In practice, especially in writing, legitimate historical revisionism is damn near indistinguishable from partisan revisionism.

And second, it is never clear among most groups precisely which atrocities we should consider in perspective and which ones we should "never forget." Hell, even when you're politically persecuted (and politically prosecuted) and see colleagues shot, like Orhan Pamuk, pompous assholes like Hitchens will still accuse you of not caring about genocide nearly as much as you ought. Genocides are a tally we keep in a very queer way. Hitchens ignores Iraq. Liberals ignore Korea and Vietnam. Europeans may well forget the Congo. Hell, Iris Chang was hated by both Chinese and Japanese politicians because she revealed a painful hurt on the Chinese side and the Nationalist suffering at the hands at the Japanese that the CCP would like to downplay. The Japanese hate is more understandable. In any case, she was ostracized for truly remembering. Most people don't want to remember all of it; it's against our basic psychology.; 7:00 PM

My good sir, Digby may bitch and complain about Democrats, and occasionally even make a prescient remark showing that she does understand the underlying theme, but she will still repeatedly fall back on, well, liberal shill-like behavior such as blaming Nader for Bush, and acting shocked, shocked, shocked to be reminded that a nation that has remained blithely untroubled while racking up quite an impressive corpse count in the last several decades could possibly stoop so low as to torture individuals. If that's not worthy of scorn, I don't know what is.

I don't see what the fuss is about the Chomsky/Milosevic thing either, but not for the same reason. He's made clear he's not defending the man, he's stated clearly that Milosevic was a major war criminal who committed vicious acts. Sorry for my moral complicity in the greatest atrocity of our times, but I really don't see what difference it makes if he disputes how many of those acts were on his direct orders vs. those undertaken by subordinates. (And didn't some British paper have to make an embarrassing retraction after similarly accusing him of making excuses for Milosevic?)

I'm actually interested in gathering data on the distribution of political (or other) opinions of faculty by tenured status, prestige of institution, public vs private school, age and so on. I've mentioned that I find Dan Klein's special-pleading whines annoying, but I'm glad that he actually distinguishes between establishment liberal and radical camps (in addition to conservative vs libertarian) in his cluster-analysis of some of his surveys (a short-coming of this roundup).; 9:15 PM
