Twenty-Twelve-Step

Well. 2012 is basically the sumnation of everything, a neat package in which Roland Emmerich reenacts Genesis 6-9 in the most hilariously overwrought of all possible ways. What does it say about our society that we can seamlessly create Himalaya-devouring tsunamis with digital magic but putting realistic cracks in the plaster is still beyond Hollywood's set dressers? The end is near, that's what. Anyway, uh, spoilers.

I expected a movie with no plot, but as the reviews have noted, the film suffers from a surfeit of plots. Every character has a back-story-and-a-half, and though it plys the usual American eschatology in which the end of the world plays as the orchestra under the operatic tale of familial reconciliation, there is something gleefully refreshing about the fact that it actually spends a great deal of time with the blended Cusack clan nowhere to be seen.

In the end, the Chinese, at the direction of the rest of the world, have built some big boats. "Arks!" As Oliver Platt says, "Leave it to the Chinese." Only they could build on such a scale. The boats are designed to withstand the force of the world-ending flood, and yet the gear mechanisms that close their doors can be jammed up by a 2" penumatic hose. "We can't engage the engines until we get a hard seal on the door!" cries the captain as they float on collision course toward the North Face of Everest. Did Cusack jam it up in the first place? Will he swim to the rescue? Reader, he will.

With three seconds left before the end, the Noble Black Scientist realizes that the billionaires whose bought admission to the boats he was only moments ago decrying as desperately unfair are going to be left behind to die, and he makes an impassioned plea to save them. Oliver Platt, a chief-of-staff type who's now in charge-ish, reminds him for the ten zillionth time that preserving a nucleus of human subjects is more important than the interest of fairness. This is a reasonable point, and that makes Platt the closest thing to evil, but Emmerich is in a forgiving mood, and no one in the movie is truly bad.

In the end, it turns out that Africa has survived the flood. Africa! Earlier in the film we see a few of the the two-of-every-animal (really!) brought aboard--giraffes, gorillas, rhinos. So, I guess that was a waste of helicopters, eh? I imagine the Africans, upon discovering that they, seemingly alone, have survived the cataclysm, can only respond with a hearty "Fuck yeah!" Until, of course, the boats full of white people show up. "Oh, hell no! Fooled us once, shame on you, but you . . . won't get fooled again!" Or, as my buddy put it on the walk back to the car, "Hello white people. Those are some nice boats. Would you like to see our bullets?"

I admire the realism I'm hearing about, having initially been annoyed at reports that Emmerich was too Sensitive to Religion to show the Kaa'ba destroyed alongside the Vatican. But he gets back to cultural basics depicting America's Top Scientists---everyone knows they're almost certain to be predominantly African-American. You can't argue with their actual success in the hard sciences. And a boatload of surviving whites showing up on African shores post-cataclysm? Look out, Helter-Skelter!

Second, I'm all for self-esteem counseling, so I don't mind that Emmerich's politically correct fairy tale appears to favor the aggrieved and/or underachieving portions of the globe. I know that if Africa and the Middle East happened to be on top of the heap right now (as they have been in the recorded past), that they'd display the same wishful solicitude for me and mine, so that I Come Out A Winner.

Sounds like Inky has given up on the idea of the free market being sufficient to provide the people with everything they need, and has decided we need a cultural commissar to be in charge of making sure our yutes get a wholesome, patriotic message in their moving pictures. It's okay when the Left Behind series sells 100 bajillion copies, but Yahweh forbid that people get a false impression of the percentage of black scientists from a movie that none of them will remember next June.

The kind of iron control you want over the culture probably won't happen, numbnuts. The good news for you: the only voting most of those "Brigade" people do is for American Idol.

Okay, forget Whitey; forget liberal arts; forget my Foaming, if you can. Numbers. What percentage of U.S. masters and PhDs in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, etc. in the last ten years would you say were awarded to African-Americans? Yes, I know that in these troubled times a goodly amount of the top talent gets automatically siphoned into Black Studies, but do still answer the question. We'll put by judges, police detectives, surgeons, hospital administrators, civil engineers, architects, and Fortune 500 CEOs for another time.

If you like, later on we'll compare the actual percentages in the true sciences with the percentages depicted in teevee, film, and white progressive personal fables, and then we'll consult the rigorous expectations of Jackson and Sharpton and Gates and West and Ogletree and Jarrett on the subject. Then if you like you can say again that this sort of canard doesn't matter. That the resulting reality-gap doesn't impact our society or public policy; doesn't increase anomie and alienation among talented black students in schools; doesn't affect race-relations generally, or macro-entitlement mentalities.....

Earlier I kept getting notices from my computer about downloading anti-spyware and how my computer is at risk and how they found a bunch of trojans and worms on my computer. So I opened my McAfee (thats the security I use and I thought it would alert me for any problems) so I checked it, no sweat it said nothing was wrong, so I wrote off the ones my computer was sending me because I was on the internet and I was trying to find a profile layout generator, and I thought that maybe it was false. So just in case I decide to run a virus scan to make sure everything is cool. I walk away from my computer for a few moments, and when i come back my computer is off. So I try to reboot it and it wont work. It refuses to reboot in windows regular. It gets to the little microsoft booting screen and then right before it hits the little chime and windows logo it turns black and just stays like that and wont do anything else. So I tried running a system restore point and a start-up repair in safe mode, I thought it would fix, I try again to reboot it, it does the same thing. But before my computer went haywire my McAfee said nothing was wrong, now here I am in safe mode trying to fix my computer, and McAfee is alerting me about how all my files need attention and how there all at risk.
