Counterexamples

I am pretty sure that Bob Herbert has written this column before, and he's certainly not the first to propose that our profligate war-making is somehow the product of the so-called all-volunteer military, that if only the yutes-of-privilege were likewise called to duty, we would hesitate to commit such blood and treasure. And of course, he is correct. Were it not for the draft and the fair share borne by the children of our élite, our conflict in Vietnam might have dragged on for nearly two decades, costing tens of thousands of of American lives, millions of southeast Asian lives, and billions upon billions of wasted dollars.

Everything's a fucking travesty with you.

I think recorded history before Vietnam should suffice to show that conscription and the heavy representation of elites in the military caste are not obstacles to war.

Yes, may I point to the UK military. It's very typical to have the elite children join the military - look at Prince Harry. What the hell would we have done with such a useless Ginger if not put him in Sandhurst? Not that I have anything against gingers. Just useless ones. But back on topic - I've also known several upper class people who saw it as their duty to volunteer to go to Helmand. Trust me - having elite youths in the military just means you have rich tossers yelping about duty and heroics. Ugh.

But IOZ, we didn't have blogs back then to act as a check on imperialism.

I'm not sure what Herbert's point was except that it's not fair for such a small percentage of the population to have to shoulder the burden alone. So it would be better if everybody was forced to kill Afghanis? What about just getting the fuck out?

And maybe I'm too cynical, but my image of the fair share borne by elites is George Bush dicking around in the coast guard while his less fortunate peers were slogging through jungles and rice paddies.

Hey I paid my two bits to get some new york irishman to fight for me in the civil war. That's capitalism.

Though a positive aspect of WWI was it killed a good portion of the British and German aristocracy.

"billions upon billions of wasted dollars."

I never thought I'd read IOZ echoing Carl Sagan echoing Everett Dirksen.

You remember old Ev - "a million here, a million there ... pretty soon you're talking about real money ..."

The German aristocracy wasn't so bad compared to the petit-bourgeois and lumpenproletariat that succeeded them.

You are so silly, periscopedepth. As Lyndon LaRouche and any self-respecting 19th century radical knew, pamphlets are the way to achieve our country.
