The Part about the Book

As a reflexive reactionary, I did not want to like Roberto Bolaño. It seemed too much like jumping onto a bandwagon. But The Savage Detectives was such dark fun, and By Night in Chile has to rank as one of the great monologues in prose fiction (not to mention that it accomplishes, if glancingly, an effect that it took Proust himself ten jillion pages to create), and before I knew it I was sold.

I mention this because I hope that my reluctance will lend some greater sense of sincerity to my critical judgment. Of all the novels I've read that were published within the last fifty years, 2666 is the finest and greatest of them. Every page is an astonishment.

haven't read Bolano. if you're critical judgment is as sincere as you claim, i suppose there is no choice but to track down a copy.

i recently finished reading Steve Toltz's A Fraction of the Whole which i mention because it touches on many of the themes regularly discussed here in the IOZ community. there is a gem on every page. i "reviewed" it too briefly here: http://www.stumplane.us/blog/2009/12/15/2239/

I had the same reservations going into this book, and similarly enjoyed nearly every page. I found it odd that most reviews said The Part About The Murders was tedious, as I enjoyed it the most. Bolano knew what he wanted to do and did it well.

IOZ's little league of inner city underachievers will take your word for it, we read blogs not books

Really? I was bored by page 100 and gave up somewhere in the middle of part 2. Savage Detectives is incredible and Last Evenings on Earth creates openings in the mind where none existed. Small little wormholes to crawl through.

2666 I'll have to give another shot at some point down the road.

to 12:34: The first part is probably the worst part. It gets good once it gets to Mexico.

Haven't read Savage Detectives, but I loved By Night in Chile and Nazi Literature in the Americas, and I've been meaning to work my way through this one, although I'll admit to being intimidated by long novels in general.

Eric,

I can't speak for IOZ but I read it in English and wondered if that was part of the problem I had with it. That is knowing that if I could and were reading it in Spanish I would have enjoyed it.

Put Pynchon's latest book on the reading list if we're making one up.

Yup, except I'd put Pamuk's My Name is Red as its equal, especially if we're doing a reading list for people willing to spend a little energy for great reward. And you'e dead right with the Proust comparison, much as i love his work.

I second the request for a recommended reading list.

In English. My Spanish comprehension is very poor. The translation is excellent; it is rendered in an idiomatic American English voice that ever-so-slightly suggests foreignness while moving with great facility through the many modes of story-telling.

Appreciate your book recommendations, I am clueless when it comes to fiction... well, no reason to limit my ignorance to one genre.

Yes, "My Name Is Red" was also excellent, a good companion to 2666.

druff and 3:48, amen. I think a "Shit We Like" about prose would really tie the decade together, but do as thou wilt, IOZ. One pal was real high on the The Savage Detectives while reading, then finished and savaged it. Bolano's at the top of my 2010 to-read list now.
