Jew No?

In the fall of 2001, as an anguished nation came to grips with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a slender, soft-spoken economics major named Elizabeth Hanson set out to write her senior thesis at Colby College in Maine. Her question was a timely one: How do the world’s three major faith traditions apply economic principles?

Ms. Hanson’s report, “Faithless Heathens: Scriptural Economics of Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” carried a title far more provocative than its contents, said the professor who advised her. But it may have given a hint of her career to come, as an officer for the Central Intelligence Agency specializing in hunting down Islamic extremists.

-Reported in the Times
I suspect this is the Times' error and not Ms. Hanson's, but it reveals something about the predominant American worldview, this presumption that "Judaism, Christianity, and Islam" are "the world's three major faith traditions." Judaism? There are more Sikhs! And what about the Hindus, yo? What about dem Boodists! What about traditional Chinese religious practices? What about Shintoism? What about African diasporic animism?

I mean, May His Name Be Blessed and Magnified, I was raised a Jew and regard my kooky former faith with the same fondness I regard certain kooky relatives, but as a "faith tradition" it still lags Desperate Housewives, you know?

Rev. Lovejoy: No Homer, God didn't burn your house down, but he was working in the hearts of your friends be they Christian, Jew, or... miscellaneous.

Apu: Hindu. There are seven hundred million of us.

Rev. Lovejoy: Aww, that's super.

As so often, the Times is indulging in unintentional metonymy. "Jews" as a population of prganic life forms are being confused with The Bible-- which probably does have the largest print/Internet run of any single religious text. Conversely, Hitler really wanted to destroy The Bible, but after a feasibility study seems to have decided to suffice with The Peeps.

Now there's the State of Israel, where confusion of life and literature seems to reign supreme.

Also, arguably, only three aspects of the same tradition.

In modern US discourse, Judeo- has become primarily an adjunct to Christian. So Chuck Norris can write in all seriousness about the threat to America's "Judeo-Christian" tradition of worshipfully commemorating the birth of Baby Jeebus. Judaism + Christianity is a large group. And pay no attention to mushr00m: Islam is a completely heathen faith composed entirely of fanatics that have been at war with American Christ ever since the Israelites were first enslaved by those Egyptian Muslims.

Aren't Jews born, not raised?

The world's three major faith traditions? That would be the first half of the bible, the second half of the bible, and the crazy bible.

No IOZ, I think that's all of 'em.

Denigrating your Jewish heritage is so childish and lame, IOZ. You really can be a narcissistic jerk. Jews, regardless of their number, have had an immense impact on the history of mankind.

Also, while you choose to focus in on a throwaway line in the article, I hope people read the whole thing. Hanson, victim of a suicide bomb, died while trying to protect us. This was a huge loss.

Would you come off it, IOZ? You're fucking Polish Catholic!

that's what you get when you send wimminz to do man jobs.

@annie: You're an Xe employee dispatched to Afghanistan? My heart goes out to you! Otherwise, the "died while trying to protect us" comment is literal nonsense.

Exactly. Nobody else ever thought of monotheism, except for Persians and Greeks and whatnot, and nobody can take that away from the Jews! Whereas what have the pagan Chinese hordes ever done? Nothing, that's what. Just invented paper, gunpowder, the compass, movable type -- minor stuff like that. Whereas the Jews gave us Hollywood! And bagels!

My buddy at the country club said jews invented copper wire. He just laughed and laughed. I didn't get it.

Leonard---

As you may be aware, we're just one decade removed from the 20th century. How many figures can you name with greater influence upon it than Marx, Einstein, and Freud? You and the other conformist anti-conformists here would do well to remember that there's usually a pretty good reason the conventional wisdom is conventional.

IOZ said...

So what. You start a blog? You turn in your voter registration card? You stop being Jewish?

Hey Annie, you might want to check out the critical responses to Cahill's, uh, scholarship before you go recommending that book. Or any of his others, for that matter.

Inkberrow said...

Anon @ 2:05---

What you say about Cahill is just one of the many things I've learned here!

The Irish DIDN'T save civilization....because there's no such thing as civilization.

Ya'll are just so edgy

The apostrophe should go between the Y and the A, not the A and the L. You big dummy.

Leonard said...

Inkberrow, as you may be aware, I was kidding. I love the Jews! But wait, is that too conformist? Gosh, it's so hard to be a conformist any more. The great thing about standards is that there are so many of them.

Dump Freud, he's worthless, and more to the point, was not really influential in the same way as Marx. Certainly got a lot of shamans in his movement, and got a lot of people shrunk, but to what effect? I'm sure Team Tribe has plenty of good third starting idea-pitchers. Boas, perhaps. Not that he'd beat, say, Darwin or Bellamy. Those guys could pitch! But still, a heroic performance for such a small team.

The Promiscuous Reader said...

Wait a minute. So Marxism is an example of the influence of Judaism on the world? Straight line from Moses to Karl, and thence to V.I., Papa Joe, and Mao? Kewl.

Hmmmm I grew up in the south and that's the way we always spelled it but what the hell nony. Fuck y'all. Happy now?

And how fortunate for us...

Enron said...

"Fuck y'all. Happy now?" They're calling the cops, put the piece away.

Hmmmm I grew up in the south and that's the way we always spelled it

Now, I can type the words, "Gosh, that's surprising", but you'll have to use your imagination to picture the droll look on my face as I say it.

The apostrophe is replacing the "ou" from "you all". I mean, think about it.

Also, Annie, Jennifer Rubin has a piece in Commentary about how Jews hate Caribou Barbie in disproportionately high numbers. Does that make you less inclined to defend them?

annie oakley said...

No. But it does make me more inclined to view you as an anti-semetic prick.

mds said...

anti-semetic prick.

Alas, it's all too true that many commenters here are anti-semetes. Those of us who aren't self-hating Semetes, that is.

Inkberrow said...

Leonard---

Please forgive my prickliness. As a Semitophile, I get that when I sniff anti-Semitism in the air, but it wasn't emanating from you.

Promiscuous Reader---

We've spoken before of your self-absorbed and indiscriminate relations with text. Something tells me even you can understand that for many purposes, including my post, "Jews" and "Judaism" are not synonymous.

IOZ said...

Jewish as fucking Tevye.

but what about AVATAR?

did you know that the iranian energy minister called Avatar "greatest film of all time"?
