The task of isolating the data points that identify one dangerous individual among thousands is hard; there will be, under the best of conditions, an element of judgment involved, an ineradicable quantum of human frailty. Tragic mistakes will always be possible. And there will be little or no defense against a lunatic, unconnected with any group, who ignites kindling in his underpants.A bit florid, perhaps, but otherwise on the money. Odd, then, that it sits in the middle of an essay haranguing us about persistent, systemic failures in state security. If there is a lesson in the Christmas non-bombing, it is that you can't defend against every nut out there any more than you can prevent every highway smash-up or household accident. To live is to accept some modicum of risk. To live in an advaned, industrailized, technological, hegemonic, militaristic, imperial society in the twenty-first century is to accept with fair certainty that someone, somewhere, wants to blow you up, like, right now. This is, as they say, the cost of doing business, an inevitable outcome of the system in which we live, work, and pretend to thrive.

Well I don't think it's quite fair to condemn a whole program because of a single slip up.
we can look back on a life of achievement, on challenges met, competitors bested, obstacles overcome. we've accomplished more than most empires, and without heed. what makes an advanced, industrialized, technological, hegemonic, militaristic, imperial society in the twenty-first century, Mr. Lebowski?
And there will be little or no defense against a lunatic, unconnected with any group, who ignites kindling in his underpants.
Yeah, I could see how this would make the Monsieur breathe a sigh of relief.
feds don't even have an answer for what's in my pants.
Harper's has an article in a recent issue on PCBs in the Hudson. Something that has been known about for decades but rarely talked about. The actions of GE in this case and the actions of many other state sponsored corporations have affected many more lives at a much greater cost than random violence like a guy lighting his pants on fire.
"Terrorism" is a shiny object to dangle, frustrate, distract, and consume the news cycle. Not much different than the incessant reporting about a guy who hits a rock with a club banging a dozen women.
Very much related to these issues is Adam Curtis' "the trap". It's available online for anyone interested.
Waddayamean im not thrivin? explain!
Oh, wait, nvmnd. Mah ramen is ready
Ve don't care. Ve still vant ze money, IOZ, or ve fuck you up.
How dare you question this massive profit opportunity for Michael Chertoff's investment/consulting group?
Don't you know that Chertoff has several body-scanner machines in mind, and that he will net a nice profit when the US Govt requires all airports and other "checkpoints" to install these machines?
You are cruel, trying to reduce the noble Skeletor's profits!
> a much greater cost than random violence like a guy lighting his pants on fire
Dude I agree. I often note the 40k americans killed on the roads annually by accidents -- a staggering TWO MILLION in total.
But people will always be more upset and angstified about human attackers from abroad. Human nature. This particular aspect of human nature, like so many, can be influenced by messages like yours, but never eliminated. If the population mean IQ was 120, your message would get better traction.
I thought the whole point is to externalize the costs.
Our society it so caught up in pursuing false dichotomies that we forget the old adage “to live is to die”
"If the population mean IQ was 120, your message would get better traction."
If the population's mean IQ were 120, they'd recenter that to 100.
many times you have been correct, ioz, and this is no exception.
what kind of moron thinks 100% success in any program, ever, government or private, has ever happened, or can ever happen, or is even within the contemplation of the designers of those programs?
generally the kind of moron who doesn't mind being enlisted as his own unwitting jailor, I guess. the kind of moron who doesn't mind having his liberties taken away, and who doesn't mind colluding in the theft of his brother's liberty.
"whoops, something bad happened again, dammit, i told you guys this would happen if we didn't prohibit ____. maybe next time you'll listen."
Not to be un-snarky and hipsterly cynical and cool and all, but there is a hell of a difference between A) asymmetrical warfare B) false flag operations and C) completely unintentional vehicular deaths.
Lets see:
A. Dead
B. Dead
C. Dead
IDK, looks pretty similar from here...
Who's being snarky and hip, Soj? I think it's pretty fair to observe that, while all those things are distinct (much as every death from starvation is distinct from death from exposure, or neglect, or say, any death ever from any other death, ever), they are all bad, if for no other reason, because they kill people. It's a matter of perspective, and triage. But generally speaking, you can't have terror or war without killing people, but if one were able to synthesize such a notion, absent the killing and intimidation (itself backed by killing), it wouldn't be much of a threat in and of itself.
Or what? Is there some other moral or practical concern in play, some great danger of terrorists actually winning or something, or is this really about the mayhem and murder?
