The first sentence contains this, ahem, gem:

" . . . enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself . . ."

Perhaps.

What's wrong with that? Afghanistan is important because of women's rights, not because lithium is used in making Blackberries. I have an iphone so this doesn't affect me.

they've known about this unobtanium for years.

in other pr news, obama is really going to let the CEO of BP have it today.

Who knew?

It's at least somewhat entertaining that this info is finally entering the mainstream. Appealing to our better, albeit more practical, angels.

My impression from a few articles I've read is that the US is acting as a proxy for the Chinese. A rent a cop to guard the mineral deposits.

...just finished that nytimes article. The narrative constructed is laughable.

"The U.S. had no idea until Indiana Jones used his whip to swing into an abandoned library with 10,000 snakes on the floor. He somehow stumbled across a dusty dossier that contained an intriguing series of old charts and data that hinted at major mineral deposits in the country."

The timing of this announcement is amazing. All the surveys and other documents date from 2007, but for some odd reason the news didn't break until after a big run of bad news. What a coincidence!

Chris Floyd has this covered, obviously.

Every Cupertino has its Kabul, as inevitable as it is sad.

So this means the US will be in Afghanistan for a trillion years?

it's been in the CIA world fact book for about two decades.

There is a joke in that picture of the sheep crossing the road and the gullibility of the American public.

Nice catch! All I can say is that the Bush administration really handed Obama a hell of a card to play.

The funny thing is it was Pentagon people, who just happened to have some geologists hanging around, that made the discovery.

Then they "briefed" Karzai.

They've obviously been looking for years, probably stumbled across stuff while plotting pipeline routes.

Soo, the CIA won't be relying on the Heroin profits anymore? Check!

I keep telling you, it's the Foundation's money.

Lithium, sure, but we could really use some tin. Do not attempt to judge the Foundation - Terminus is all that stands between the Empire and the bright, twisty slide into barbarism.
