Neither he nor most of his fellow members of the ruling classes have a problem with his being gay, and for those who do, these problems are overridden by the more important commonalities they share as a result of being members of that class. If only we at the bottom could realize that they feel that way, we could stop telling fairy (ha!) stories about these people, and stop feeling "pity" for them, and start maybe feeling some of that class solidarity ourselves, down here.

So she's projecting upon Mehlman her own feelings of horror at anything that would prevent her from being as loudly and ostentatiously progressive as possible. But yes, the notion of authenticity is amusing. He's financially secure, well-connected, and personally unaffected by all the anti-homo legislatin' and referendin' he helped coordinate for his bosses. Seems pretty authentic to me. Mary Cheney isn't a phony for reserving certain perquisites to powerful people such as herself; she's consistent. So I'm not shedding tears for Ken, Mary, or Roy Cohn, unless I'm laughing hard enough at the time.
I'm intrigued by the steady expansion of the LGB acronym. All it needs now is to add S and that's the whole family catered for.

Long before this, the grassroots right hated Mehlman. Mostly for immigration. But a few mentioned the rumor he was gay.
