The LOLiban

Oh, lulz, Digs is MAD AS HELL! Noted lesser egret and poll-faker Markos Moulitas has written a book called Liberal Fascism American Taliban. It is a very fair comparison!

Markos has written a polemic called "American Taliban" in which he draws an ironic comparison between the far right in American politics and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He isn't saying they are interchangeable. That's ridiculous. Obviously, one exists within a secular Western democracy with a rule of law and the other well ... doesn't. And just as the American far right doesn't require beards and pray to Mecca or speak Pashtun, neither do they execute women in the middle of sports stadiums for adultery. But that doesn't mean they aren't, in fact, repressive, authoritarian, theocratic, anti-feminist and (on the fringes) quite violent.
Oh, ahahaha. Ahahahahahahahahhahahahahhahahah. Oh, ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Oh god. Oh, oh, oh help me. Oh god. Oh, someone, please. Oh LOLZLOLZ. Wait, oh, god. Let me get my breath. Okay. Lemme just try something out on ya, son:
Goldberg has written a polemic called "Liberal Fascism" in which he draws an ironic comparison between the far left in American politics and the totalitarian regimes in mid-century Europe. He isn't saying they're interchangeable. That's ridiculous. Obviously one exists within a representative Western democracy and a rule of law and the other well . . . doesn't. And just as the American far left doesn't build concentration camps, swear loyalty to a single Leader, or speak German, neither do they execute Jews, Gypsies, and political opponents. But that doesn't mean they aren't, in fact, repressive, authoritarian, collectivist, anti-Chrstian and (on the fringes) quite violent.
Lady, you are a fucking hack!

It's not particularly complicated. Digby and Goldberg are correct and correctable to much the same extent. The totalitarian tendencies generally graced with the description "fascist" exalt a particular nation-state or a people at the expense of the rest of humanity, the unworthies, the threats. Totalitarian tendencies from the left proceed in the name of All the People, for the Good of All....except nonconformists, critics, (Saboteurs! Subversives!) and other purveyors of inconvenient truths over time. The pretextual weak and villainous exist and die in roughly equal numbers.

"Lady, you are a fucking hack!"

EXACTLY like Jonah Goldberg!

The only thing I get from Digby's post is that she doesn't understand the meaning of the phrase "ironic comparison," and I'm not referring to the 'irony' that a similar comparison could be made of the left and totalitarianism, but that, literally Joe Biden, she doesn't understand what the word irony means.

I picked up liberal fascism at the library last year. From what I remember Golberg's "comparison" is meant to be serious scholarship and not meant to be ironic at all. In fact it isn't meant to be a "comparison" between liberalism and fascism but rather an investigation into the supposedly shared "roots" of liberalism and fascism.

Goldberg's attempt is to rewrite history or at least present a counter narrative to Edward O. Paxton's analysis that modern fascist movements actually grew out of the KKK of the 1880s.

We get it Digby's a hack.

But Kos is making a point that has never been made before with such detail or such care.

The "editorial reviews" at Amazon are perhaps even more entertaining, Rachel Maddow's especially.

Yeah, like Digby said: Kos is a writer

But Mr. Fun---I'm an armchair polemicist IRL too. ROTFLMAO!

I hafta agree with 12:23. Goldberg was supposedly serious about the scholarship of his effort.

for a liberal writer to not be intrigued by the huge irony that these similarly anti-modern fundamentalists are now organizing themselves around the idea that the other is the devil just strikes me as inconceivable

A Brief Guide to Writing A Comparison/Contrast Essay

Writing a comparison/contrast paper involves comparing and contrasting two subjects. A comparison shows how two things are alike. A contrast shows how two things are different.

Choosing a Topic

When you choose a topic, be sure not to choose two totally unrelated subjects. You must start with subjects that have some basic similarities. For instance, you could choose to compare/contrast two movies, two authors, two modes of transportation, or two sports figures, but you would not want to try to compare train travel and Babe Ruth!

Brainstorming

The first thing you want to do is brainstorm everything you know about each subject and then go back and look for connections that show similarities and differences, which might look something like this, or this.

Developing a Thesis

The thesis statement will evolve from the brainstorming. Look at your list and ask yourself some questions.

"Is there something important, significant, or interesting in the similarities and differences on my list?"

"What have I discovered about Obama and Hitler?"

To conclude, restate your thesis. Finally, mention the little-known fact that Babe Ruth was in fact a train.

Can't believe you didn't post the best paragraph:

Are they mirror images? Of course not. But it's infinitely interesting to consider the ways in which they are alike and for a liberal writer to not be intrigued by the huge irony that these similarly anti-modern fundamentalists are now organizing themselves around the idea that the other is the devil just strikes me as inconceivable. I think it's a fascinating and provocative observation. I mean, come on --- just last week-end we watched a rally at the Lincoln Memorial where a bunch of conservative religious folks listened raptly to a loon talking up a black robed regiment of religious leaders as he decried the pending takeover of Sharia law! Setting aside the politics for a moment, what kind of writer doesn't isn't struck by that image?

Indeed, what kind of writer?

Kos waited his whole damn life to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down he thought "Well, isn't this nice." And isn't it ironic? Don't cha think?

No Alanis, I don't. Highly funny, maybe. Ironic, no.

Oh fish.

Here I thought the big name liberals had just agreed to ignore Kos' goofy little book.

Really, at least Goldberg thought about it and said, "I could write a book about how the American left is made of commies, but everybody's done that... Fuck it, I'm going for the brass ring. I'm gonna call 'em fascists, too."

It's the only time in Goldberg's professional life that he put any kind of creativity or thought into his work.

And not only do you rip him off, you don't even have the decency to come up with a new insult to hurl at the conservatives.

Our conservative YHWH worshipers are a lot like foreign conservative YHWH worshipers? I've only heard that on EVERY LIBERAL BLOG EVER.

When you start putting in less effort then Jonah Goldberg, you need to take a long, hard look at your life.

So, Ioz, your point is that, because Pantload's argument is wholly inapposite, any similarly-structured argument is therefore of equal value?

Just, y'know, wondering.

And here I thought IOZ praised Jonah a time or two for writing a snotty book that pissed off liberals. Funny that he isn't praising Kos for returning the favor.

Oh, wait, no it isn't. Kind of predictable, in fact.

Anonymous said...

Looking forward to IOZ's spirited defense of burn a Koran day.

Loved the upthread Anon's pointing out the Amazon "editorial reviews", but Rachel Maddow's tepid "if you think this is that, it's not; it's this" review isn't the best. David Frickin' Coverdale's is the best, just by being there at all.

earnest liberal demands equal insults to demagogues. god bless your angry ineffectual little hearts.

Greenwald said much the same thing about it, but I suspect IOZ isn't going to attack him for it, seeing as how he got turned over Glenn's knee and paddled last time he picked an argument with him.

Charles F. Oxtrot said...

Our Constitutional Lawyer won an argument with IOZ?

Somehow I doubt that. Our Constitutional Lawyer doesn't debate or argue -- he pontificates, and where possible, deletes comments that expose him as a deluded fool or liar. He's got to be one of the most over-rated hack "writers" in Blogtopia.

Nonny Mouse said...

Right, Oxy, we heard this one before, how you, the fake lawyer, singlehandedly demolished Greenwald in an argument. As I recall, you were unable to provide a link proving this, uh, demolition ever happened. Given what a fool you've made of yourself in your slapstick attempts to argue with John Caruso and Roy Edroso (who you amusingly insisted on calling "alicublog", being functionally illiterate and therefore unable to distinguish the writer from his blog), I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that you're a brazen liar who needs to increase his meds.
