It's a strange speech to give now, with the freedom campaign in Iraq officially over and Afghanistan...well, no one really cares about Afghanistan. I mean, what possible other conflicts with countries that did not attack or pose a threat to the United States could he be concerned about?

I do like the quick reference to the draft. I mean, if you have to reinstate slavery in order to keep the military in touch with today's youth, so be it.

He rejected the draft! He just wants the nation's smartest kids to consider, as they obviously have not, the big upside that offsets the modest pay, terrible working conditions, substantial chance to be killed or maimed, etc.: “the opportunity to be given extraordinary responsibility”.

LOL, yeah, I know that if there's one thing I crave from my bosses, or my employees crave from me, it's "extraordinary responsibility." Ha!

Most of these Dukies are probably going on to business school and Wall Street. So they'll get their killing and pillaging in, just not in the same way that John Wayne used to do it in the movies.

Huh. College kids don't want to kill and die in the service of the empire.

Maybe they're actually learning something useful for once.

“How long can these brave and broad young shoulders carry the burden that we — as a military, as a government, as a society — continue to place on them?”

haha - THEN STOP

At least elite undergraduates could care enough to spit on American soldiers. But since Roe v. Wade, "babykillers" just doesn't resonate like it used to.

In his defense (sort of) this nation has created a virtually hereditary warrior class.

The pay right now is pretty good.

The problem with recruiting at places like Duke (and I went to a similar school) is that most of the people who go there certainly don't want to go into the military, they want to order the military about. Or they want to be the hard faced men who did very, very well out of the war.

Eventually the soldiers will catch on that the elite, and not just the liberal elite, hates them, and sometime after that things will get ugly. I think Gates knows that, but there is not much he can do about it at this point.

Eventually the soldiers will catch on

Doubt it.
