Arbeit Macht Gay

Aw, this is sweet, albeit hilariously and absurdly naive. The notion that "the Ivies" are somehow at core principle opposed to American war-making, or war even in some general abstract sense, is bonkers. Obviously it is no coincidence that these fine establishment institutions keep perpetuatin' an establishment fanatically committed to waging war. "They can align themselves with colleges such as Hobart, Earlham, Goshen, Guilford, Hampshire, George Fox and a long list of others that teach alternatives to violence." Ahaha. Guilford? Hampshire? Even Obies laugh at Hampshire. Goshen? Earlham! Oh-ho! That'll convince the notable alums.

Good thing he doesn't even come close to saying this then. In fact, he seems to agree with you: "Will the Ivies have the courage for such stands? I'm doubtful." He suggests Ivies follow the lead of Hobart, etc., only in that each school listed offers classes in peace studies or nonviolence.

Dude, Colman McCarthy is an anarchist and a badass, albeit of the christian zealout variety, and perhaps too focused on nonviolence, but he's certainly not naive.

Anon's rebuttal is compelling, but for one over-looked fact: Harvard et al. have produced the most successful warmongers and apologists in the last few generations despite prohibiting ROTC.

Harvard ALREADY IS a motherfucking Pentagon Annex. Every goddamn war criminal at the white house and the (civilian) Pentagon attended an Ivy. So the naive part is this: what the fuck does McCarthy think he is saving?

Next week's column: ending painful execution.

Next La Rana comment: Soldier naive for fighting against single enemy instead of entire enemy army at once.

Small victories for small minds.

hohoho

seriously though. We'll get right on that peace on earth shit as soon as we stop the military from providing a subsidized means for poor folks to attend rich-folk colleges.

Goddard and Reed are merely ignoring being not-on-a-list.

Uh ZOZ - I'm not sure the Ober in Oberlin means, like, the same thing as Ober in Ober Gatlinburg.

So please, next time only take out enought to win, wudja?

You sound like a jilted lover nearly ever time you write about college.

Did you have fun at Homecoming this year?

I loved college. I just managed to recognize it for what it was and is. The two are not unrelated.

This blog is really interesting. It is really hard to believe that by giving the link we can increase the traffic to our website.

just a theme of put downs of various colleges by you be they ivies, "run of the mill midwestern state schools", or hampshire.

"Colleges are like old age homes, except more people die in college"

no evergreen or bennington on that list? I didn't bother to read the article.

just went and read it...

there's a revolving door between the Pentagon and Harvard already. Is this guy out to lunch?

also, the article reminded me that it had occurred to me during Obama's candidacy that he was essentially a recruiting tool [in addition to the his other uses] to get more blacks and "people of color" to join the military.

Between you being exclusive amongst a bunch of organization you routinely mock for being elitist bullshit and la Rana talking about Harvard producing people as if it's a fucking "way to think" factory that could make all of its students pacifists by simply employing the proper curriculum... fuck, seriously, stop. Oh it's too good.

"I loved college. I just managed to recognize it for what it was and is."

And "what it is" (OC that is) is a hothouse of pwog-lib Obama worship, a conveyer belt for mid-to-high level Obama admin appointments, and a factory for the NGO "third sector." Of course you knew this is if you've been reading your glossy alumni mag

What in the world did you think I was talking about?

What in the world did you think I was talking about?

Nothing other than what you were talking about. ("Of course you knew this..."). I was just jumping at the opp to tootle my own curdled (OC grad) bugle. Now please excuse me while I go manage my Calvert Investment Mutual Fund, after spending a few minutes piously pondering the splendors of LEED certified architecture

C'mon guy, let's do a serialized comic book (oops, I mean "graphic novel") on OC and the pwog-lib complex in the age of complacent late imperial mediocrity. Chris Hedges style, with a little more class content and a little less seminarian's righteous rage. It can include a mirthful skewering of how brownstone Brooklyn "graphic novelists" fit squarely into the sad equation. My agent will be contacting you.

I think this article was probably a good kick off to a potential series of articles about this topic. So many writers pretend to know what they’re talking about when it comes to this topic and in reality, very few people actually get it. You seem to grasp it though, so I think you ought to take it and run. Thanks!
