One of the more interesting derangements of what I will call the Earnest Left is its weird capacity to recognize as pretext that which it nevertheless treats as root cause.

Since the polar ice caps are melting, Santa Claus must be homeless; therefore, we may now dispense with organized religion.
In other news, former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has changed foreign policy advisors.

Haha, she thinks it's a Schwinn!
I prefer the Ernest Left. "Hey, Vern! Let's change the frame!"
HAHAHA LP Steve!
It's like reading the old wrestling magazines before they broke kayfabe, only I'm sure the editors of those magazines were at least aware that they were only playing along.
Does this mean we can expect quotes from OTHER fine films directed by the Brother's Coen?
Sorry, but it's "who are you going to believe, your own two eyes or me."
--Groucho Marx
The smartest man ever to live.
The Bush administration used the “war” as justification for undermining the best of America’s principles. We have witnessed the abuse of international human rights standards, the unlawful detention of thousands of women and men, and the condoning of torture.
Undermining? Sounds more like returning to its roots. Or should I say, Roots?
Since you make an issue of it, it's "who you gonna believe, me or your own eyes" and it was said by Chico not Groucho.
I thought Groucho said it in a movie but you are probably right.
I'm far too lazy to check.
Chico said it dressed up as Groucho.
Also, your "lying" eyes is an update on the Marx bit by Richard Pryor (or maybe someone in between; I don't know). Probably stolen, but definitely improved. And since turned into a minor internet meme.
Will never forget the Richard Falk article that made The Nation's official case for attacking Afghanistan back in the day. One of the few times I ever canceled a magazine. I never went back. I hate those people.
Yeah, I don't get this Let's Pretend This Was Really About Osama game. I think it's about creating a narrative for the Little Peoples so's they might exert some anti-war pressure after they get done dancing around in Osama's blood. That, or for some reason, the rulers want to redeploy elsewhere and this gets them out of Afghanistan with an aura of success.
The idea that anyone would believe this is both Mission Intended and Mission Accomplished is stupid beyond belief, but after the past couple days, I doubt that there's any stupidity that could surprise me, from anyone at any level of any political stripe.
I agree with Hernando, I think the whole thing is a fraud. I mean, throwing the body in the sea? What the fuck is that? Please don't tell me it was in line with Islamic burial practices because it isn't. Anyone who believes the government deserves everything that happens to them. I have no sympathy. After living with Americans for sixty odd years I can say almost everyone deserves what they get in America. What a scum fuck nation.
hey, i'll take any pretext if it works
Uh,Monsieur, your vacation is over. Where is the new post?
The fucking service around here is awful!!!
Just for the record, I never said the hit was a fraud. What I meant was the idea that our presence in Afghanistan was about Osama.
I believe the rulers killed OBL.
Sorry Hernando, didn't mean to put words in your mouth. When I say fraud it doesn't require that they didn't kill him. But the fact is you cannot trust anything the government says and double for the congenital liar Obama.
It's a rhetorical tactic to reveal the pretext for what it is. Of course, for such a thing to work, people have to be (a) paying attention, and (b) able to process information logically. So, um, yeah, good luck with that.
Nobody gives a good root cause these days.
