I know I am not the first to point out that David Brooks is the only man in America who could fail to find a Red Lobster in exurban Pennsylvania, a territory that he mistakes for rural America, but as the Patented Son-of-a-1-percenter and a scion of poverty county, PA, I'm obliged to offer a bit of sour correction.
Then there is what you might call Red Inequality. This is the kind experienced in Scranton, Des Moines, Naperville, Macon, Fresno, and almost everywhere else. In these places, the crucial inequality is not between the top 1 percent and the bottom 99 percent. Are there no investment offices in Scranton? No hospitals? No law offices? Small cities and towns may lack media conglomerates and sports franchises, but they do have cardiologists and attorneys and prosperous home builders. The literal top 1% of income earners in the US starts around $380K, but the top 5% starts at just over a buck-fiddy, well within the earning range of your average kuntry doctur. Anyway, Brooks reminds us that without a collegducation, most of us schmoes lack the opportunity to ascend into the upper echelons of our society's unquestionable inequality; why, with wider book learning, every mere blacksmith's son may seek to achieve his earldom before his true betters chop off his fucking head. This is easy to make fun of, but it's really one of the saddest conceits of our time. Bachelors degrees are like TVs and cell phones--even poor people have 'em!, much to the chagrin of our high-wage media moralists. The idea that giving every single soul a sheepskin will immensely enrich its earthly passage so completely misunderstands the valuation of commodities that it could only have been dreamed up by a capitalist. Oy vey--if every hillbilly in Texas were sitting on his own oil well, then no one gets rich. Universal college education can only ever recapitulate universal high school by becoming utterly worthless; if the 99% Tumblr is any indication, it's already occurred even with only, what, a quarter of the population actually receiving (I will not say earning) a 4-year degree? Next up, masters; doctorate. A lifetime of contemplative retreat in order to qualify as a candidate for an unpaid janitorial internship!
The sneering aristocratic mien is a really charming affect on a man who purports to have wandered out into countryside to commune with the Real People. They fuck, divorce, breed like rabbits, and their table manners are atrocious! And what do the evangelicals of the American university experience imagine their college educated civilization will actually look like. Is every living person to be a civil engineer or an MD? Can a society composed entirely of pharmacists prosper? Can a nation in which every man and woman is a CPA survive?

There are thirty-three Red Lobster restaurants in Pennsylvania, including one in DuBois, my maternal grandmother's home town. Current population is eight thousand, 98% white. Also among the best restaurants in town is The Tannery Bar and Grill at the Country Club. They have a Sunday brunch buffet featuring a carving station, made to order omelettes and waffles, soups, salad and dessert bars, plus hot lunch entrees.
DuBois Business College and Penn State DuBois are located there. The latter offers nine associate degrees and the first two years of nearly all of the 160 majors available at the main Penn State campus.
Amazing that anyone even mentions a schmuck like David Brooks. What a non-entity!
Only when the last term paper is handed in, the last diploma handed out, the last tassel turned to the other side of the hat will man finally realize he cannot eat college degrees.

Remember the old song from the Roaring 20's:
Gee but I wanna be a G-man
Go bang, bang-bang-bang ...
If your analysis is correct, then we must update this ditty to
Gee but I wanna be a C-man,
Learn yin, yang-yin-yang.
(where "C" might = "College", or might = the old "gentleman C" that Princeton of yore was famous for)
As charitable a reading as I can muster is that Brooks kinda wants to say that the OWS protests are really a dispute between the middle and upper classes -- between super-privileged and kinda-privileged -- and that lost in the shuffle are the super poor. That would have been a mostly accurate point to make, although I think it a somewhat overbroad mischaracterization of what's actually going on. Instead, we got Brooks' standard dumbfuckery.
Agreed, Anon11:27. As Chris Rock put it, the really poor people are too hungry to have clever signs.
Yes, Nony, that may be right, but the problem with Brooks is the whole "let them eat cake" schtick he has going on. His concern for them is so condescending and clueless as to be worse than useless. It's a backhanded compliment that only deepens the stereotype of the dim, unwashed masses.
prof heart warming, one of the things that i do for a living is help make signs.. with .. .keep it sweet,to the point of telling .. small lettering ..hungry.. .
The assumption is that everyone pines to be a corporate whore. The assumption is that having far more than you need will make you happy, and immune from death. The assumption is that working with your hands is somehow bad and will make you unhappy. College degrees are so plentiful that they are becoming useless anyway. The college loan industry is a scam to enslave the graduates to debt before they achieve Nirvana in a Bachelors degree. It seems a disservice to the young and the naïve to cause them to believe that a college degree will make them happy or that commuting in long grey lines to their destination of nowhere except a big fat corporate ass that yearns to be kissed will make life complete. When jobs disappear the first thought is “back to school” with a whole parade of private universities online dangling a bright future on the end of a carrot string while charging outrageous fees for this timely service, another modern myth.
Can we all be Bobo Brookses, money for nuttin', and yer chicks for free? It cannot possibly take even an online catskin to do whatever it is that Bobo does.
Let's all get in on that easy money, the "sweeping generalization in the service of our corporate betters" grift.
David Brooks is a dickhead who wouldn't know a Red Lobster if one jumped up and twisted his nuts off.

What about a Medium Lobster, LA?
Dunno, EL. Such questions should probably be addressed to Fafnir or Giblets.
Serve Giblets crunchy shrimps. Serve Giblets crunchy shrimps NOWWW!
Is there anyone posting on here that is happy/financially stable/whatever, lacking a college degree, and can explain to me how you did it?
Sorry, Weebie - statue of limitations hasn't run out yet ...
Sir, please refrain from using the term " collegducation"as it is a registered trademark belonging to Ivy League Schools Inc.
Here's your answer, Weeble.
"A lifetime of contemplative retreat in order to qualify as a candidate for an unpaid janitorial internship! "
If you can line up a gig as an elementary school janitor, you've got it made. Free room and board if you consider "tater tots" food, and you don't mind sleeping in closets. Who needs money when the shelves in the library need dusting?
@ Weeble
Generally happy & whatever degreeless. The financial bit's always been the kicker, but then, I did drop out a semester shy of degreehood & have come to suspect I'd have attained a tad more stability by now were it not for these fucking loans. Live & learn!
Yo, IvyLeagueSchools - is that "duc
in "ducation" like "duc" in "ducdame, ducdame, ducdame"?

what do the evangelicals of the American university experience imagine their college educated civilization will actually look like. Is every living person to be a civil engineer or an MD?
Every living person will have a B.A. in English, education, women's studies, film and television studies, race pride studies, or turf management.
Can a society composed entirely of pharmacists prosper? Can a nation in which every man and woman is a CPA survive?
At least a CPA has a useful skill, and can outsource his talent to China or someplace that actually makes things. Narcissism studies are fine for indoctrinating children into pro-state activism, but they are useless from the POV of any employer other than the state.
Weeble, I doubt anyone who reads this can answer your question. However, you might profitably ask whether there is anyone posting on here that is happy/financially stable/whatever, who has a college degree but never uses anything he learned in it in his job. (Or her.) There, you might get some interesting answers.
the one OWS person I know went to a 50k a year school his parents paid for. Of course he spends all his time at OWS "documenting" with his 10k dollar Leica camera for his photoblog and his next self published "photobook" (financed by his parents no doubt).
Whatever solidarity and sympathy I would have for the spectacle of OWS has been whittled away by its' trustafarian elements.
DId anyone hear the 10 minute infommercial on NPR last week about the Dupont corporations get healthy and lose weight initiative? I'm still laughing my ass off.

Maybe the best family-owned restaurant in DuBois is Luigi's Ristorante. From their menu:
The Tate family name was originally “Teti”. We come from the Abruzzi region in Italy, the Province of Chieti, and the town of Torricella Peligina. Our Grandfather always said the Abruzzse were the purest Italians, because the conquering armies could never get to their women – hidden high in the mountains.
How in the name of Christ does a CPA in Des Moines "outsource" her "talent" to China? Up and move to Shenzhen?
In the future we will pay PricewaterhouseCoopers to mold our children in its image and then cast most of them aside...
Mr. Lakadaisical, please refrain from mocking our registered trademarks. That can be construed as a Hate Crime (Reg'd).
this link was posted at the reddit which is now the home of a small band of refugees from Slate Best of the Fray (now closed to posting):

I think it's quite relevant to M'sieur's post here ...
Our Grandfather always said the Abruzzse were the purest Italians, because the conquering armies could never get to their women – hidden high in the mountains.
I didn't know Leonard was from Abruzzi.
I'm the opposite of IOZ. I grew up working class, prol, lower class brat, guttersnipe, or trash. Which ever term you like. My observations are heavily biased by that. I have a college degree that I paid for through being a grunt of the empire. That broke my brain washing and helped me find my anarchist ways.
College was always a means of maintaining class separation without saying that is what you are doing. In the past we said the ruling class was there because they were derived from gods, selected by god, or from social Darwinism. After the Enlightenment and the rise of socialism that shit didn't work as well. The ruling elite and their manger class needed another lie. So these people, the ruling elite and their manager class, had college degrees. That became the reason, they had a degree in something. It is excellent as a class divider. With that scam there were enough people moving in class for a few people to claim it was the cream rising to the top *finger tapping side of nose*. Truth is it is bullshit, most degrees are worthless as any real identifier of skill or leadership. Four years of beer bongs for a Communications Degree from State U means pretty much nothing.
Problem is that in this system, the ruling elite have stolen what they can from the poor, so their vampire eyes have turned to their manager class. What, you don't think they will stop getting richer do you. The colleges now just fleece some more from the middle class kids as their ass slides down to the prols. I say welcome, better lose your pretentious attitude before some one beats it out of you, though.
Now, I like these OWS people but they seem to have some typical middle class confusion. I mean come on, could they not crack a fucking book about similar actions. Hey, read up on the AIM occupation of Alcatraz just to get a heads up on the problems you will face. Did you even look at what Europeans faced? The next is that the Popo will some how decide not to smack their asses back to stupid if they just appeal to them. Popo exists to enforce the ruling elites rule, people. It is their job to smack you back to stupid if you question the ruling elite. They are often the most thuggish thugs of the working class with a strong reactionary tendency. Good luck on that appeal. The police are not here to help you. Also, everything I see always seems to be "middle class this, middle class that." I, and I'm sure I'm not alone with this, don't give a fuck about the middle class. What, you want to be back into the managerial class, what do prols get. More factory wage slaves or can we wait tables for you. Sure that beats starving but could you atleast offer something for us to join you. We're not your private army.
Sorry, end rant.
tommy, what do you mean by the opposite of ioz ?.. i haven't been around here for as long as most .. . but he comes like someone that may have something of money from some family business .. . that grew somehow .. very working class ,of a bar and something else ..was that just a tease .. . ,
EL - that link is priceless...
comes across like ..i mean .. ops that made me giggle
lucid - yeah - ain't it a piss?
Meanwhile, since you're around at the moment, here's some stuff I posted with you (among others here) in mind:

Yeah - I know someone's gonna ding me for floggin my blog, but what the hell - I really think you might enjoy the "Xanthippe" one ...
Red Lobster? Luigi's? I've been to Pennsyltucky, and vittles are the only thing on the menu. As far as education, their best and brightest have to come to Ohio to receive one.
Maybe y'all should move to China, I understand they lack the ability to perform guzindas.
anne - the reason IOZ is in the 50th percentile exactly is because he's only half-kike (I think the other half is wop, not sure.) anyway, as he's said or alluded to many times here, Pop's money was honestly earned as a hospital CEO (anyone who don't think that's an honest living has never seen George C Scott and Diana Rigg in the movie "Hospital" ...

Weeble:
Although I graduated with a B.A. in English, it didn't appear to have had any influence on getting me jobs.
Work history:
1) Summer semester night shift on the assembly line of a metal-refining factory.
2) Delivery boy (on foot) for an office supplies store.
3) Miscellaneous duties at a bookstore: delivery boy; shipping clerk; book returns; accounts receivable; occasionally helping out on the sales floor; making the daily bank deposit. (The latter duty was given to me because, in the manager's words, I "didn't look like someone who had any money" and therefore wouldn't get mugged.)
4) Benefit authorizer for the Social Security Administration.
5) Medical transcriptionist.
6) Welfare caseworker (current job).
Jobs 4 and 6 were the result of my scores on civil service exams.
Even the bookstore job had nothing to do with my English degree. I was hired on the spot while making a delivery from the office supplies store. The bookstore was in a panic: their shipping clerk had suddenly quit during the Christmas rush.
It's possible to get a degree in medical transcription, but I didn't bother and it never hindered me.
Come to think of it, the only influence obtained from my going to college may have been at the factory job. The personnel manager, who interviewed me, thought it a hoot that an Ivy League student was applying. He chuckled about it all through the interview. No one there, he claimed, had ever gone to a university. I think he hired me because it amused him to say that a college boy was working the assembly line.
Sorry about the length of this post, but you wanted to know if it could be done. Much of it has been happenstance, as you can see. I'm now as financially secure as I've ever been, but I'm in more favorable circumstances than many people: no dependents, no car, no house, no debts, no medical conditions.
As for happy: well, no, as far as work goes. To be employed at a seriously understaffed and badly run office, at a time when people applying for welfare are so numerous and so desperate: I wouldn't recommend it.
Anne, I mean opposite. IOZ is from the top of the economic class, I'm from the bottom. He is also funny, I am not.
I did mean opposite in a bad way. I really like IOZ's writing. He calls bullshit bullshit better than anyone I've seen.
That should be "I didn't mean..." I should use the preview button.
but there was some mention of granny doing the books ,of keeping .. for some family bar, business .. .of tending .. . ... . oh i guess i'd better go back and delete those comments i made about having visions ..of pup above in a gown of bedding tending .. . as well . . .
yes, anne - you're right - he does have one or more uncles who owned/own a bar ... not in the nuclear family though, so far as I recall ...
but he also talked about something to do with spending a lot of time tending .. .didn't he ? .. .fitting for this post .. in how it goes in to how he deals with all of us now .. . , and also fitting as a job , that requires little schooling .. .
yes again you're correct, anne - where better to make some money while cruising for the odd-man-out than in the bosom of your family?
Weeble,
I was kicked out of high school. I dropped out of college. I drifted for years. I met a girl. We drifted for some more years. Her father passed away. She inherited. We are living happily ever....
Totes OT, Monsieur, but I thought you might like some comments on your favorite quarterback.

Those were all great comments, thanks. I've been lurking here for about 2 years and haven't really commented except for an anonymous post around election day. Raised by two painters/art teachers, my dad's job allowed me private school education for free, they respected my choice to attend the public high school. My state school BA got me into an alternative certification teaching program here in NYC, where I taught for 4 years, got my Masters in Elem Ed then continued to work within the public school system while slowly starting to "pursue my music." Currently work nights running a music venue (a job I love that doesn't require my degree), raising two daughters during the day, planning to homeschool, and sometimes tutoring rich kids for extra cash.
I don't regret my degree. Over and done. Except for the debt, of course.
..in coming in just now .. .late evening ... on seeing ..the mention of nature boy .. i feel something of eery, haunting .. . i can't remember why .. . of what ..connect i'm making .. . /does anyone know why eden abhez preferred not having his name in caps. ?
I don't regret my degree (engineering) at all and my corporate whoredom is a consequence of causes and conditions.
I think there were plenty of people who didn't belong in college and that's mostly the point here, but if you can get out NOT being a cog then why not?
Making money without a degree is simple - work for yourself.
I'm not saying it's easy, or that it always succeeds, but it's the only way and when it works it works.
.. .no need of an answer on 11:15 ..i just came across in my reading .. the usual reasoning .. that i've heard before .. .
I really enjoy how your blog turned out. I cant wait for you to leave a comment on my own webspace. Its pretty airless at themoment. Best of luck.
Is every living person to be a civil engineer or an MD? Can a society composed entirely of pharmacists prosper? Can a nation in which every man and woman is a CPA survive?
These are the kinds of questions I asked myself when i watched Paul Krugman, Bill Maher & Rachel Maddow (an economist, a comedian, and a lawyer) scold the scores of liberal arts majors for not being "qualified" to fill 3.5 million science jobs. You know, because China &India have a percentage of their huge populations willing to worth for comparatively nothing. They don't address the idea that people have to go into debt "certified as qualified", examine what "qualified" even means in our society. The real problem is that people guessed wrong about what might be a career prospect when they were eighteen.
They never touch the ideas that maybe there are simply too many of us for most to be "useful" or that our unhealthy fixation of efficiency, and Six Sigma-ing everything has negative consequences. I guess it's just easier to assume that the person squeezed out when we try to two people do the job of three is simply being punished for his poor life choices.
you know, i heard tell of a crazy notion floating in the more country parts of the internet, that folks might get something out of college besides a job. the even crazier notion is that if you're going just for a job, you're in for a might heap of trouble.
pigs will fly when bankers clean the toilets.
so it's easy to think of brooks as an idiot, but i think he's sorta onto something. at least he's sniffing at it, even if he doesn't know what it is.
the difference between h.s. and college isn't so much the educational content as it is the socialization. can't quite put my finger on it since i've only been turning the idea in my head for a little while this morning.
i'm thinking (anecdotally) about the relationship between me (b.a., j.d.) with my mother in law (h.s., i think). thinking also about the relationship between my sister-in-law (b.a., maybe an m.s.?) and her mother-in-law-to-be (h.s.) similar cases.
there are just certain "immature" behaviors that don't really make sense to me. for example, my m-i-l has this need to be "queen bee". it's something i remember from h.s., but evaporated in college. i hypothesize that, when you've only had a h.s. education, there are certain things (like "acceptable" behaviors) that are sorta frozen in time--hence "immature".
anyway, just a thought.
Puppylander,
What experiences would lead you to believe that college is where self-important assholes with a need to dominate others mature into thoughtful and decent people? Because most of my friends & acquaintances hold at least a BA and those who were pricks as kids generally remain pricks today.
97% bitchiz! That's whatta mdphd will bring ya! Marvel at da size of ma shiney toyz!
Huzza for the corprit warfer-welfer state!
Capt'n Obvious
puppylander: I think that the cliquuishness and petty dominance games and one upmanship is sublimated into other things...things which are not seen by the larger culture as "immature". (The pursuit of the corner office) Heck...the power games of our global business and political elites are amazingly sociopathic and immature in most respects.
Nontheless, exposure to other people and ideas and places in college can help one move beyond a parochialism that you may interpret as immature.
d.m.,
don't get me wrong. i'm not saying that college makes you a better person. it just adds a different layer of socialization and affects attitudes on any number of topics. (just as you can be developmentally frozen at h.s., you can be frozen at undergrad, grad, academia, etc. too.)
b.m.,
yes, i agree.
in my response above to d.m., i suggest that we can find this freezing at any number of levels. i like your introduction of the word parochialism. it's all parochialism, just different.
and we can think of it in any number of forms. for example, my m-i-l is an utterly unsophistocated consumer. she falls prey to every advertising trick in the book. her daughters aren't so naive, but they fall to other forms of bamboozlement (obama, pwoggiedom). and this is not to say i've attained nirvana. i'm sure i'm susceptible to other forms of bamboozlement as well. i just don't know it yet.
Excuse me, but some us who get college degrees do so only as a side effect of years of enjoyed learning of knowledge and skills, especially in the sciences.
Weeble - I'm a NYC musician myself - perhaps we should commiserate with a drink sometime?
BMW for da WIN!
Capt'n Obvious
Yeah, puppylander, sounds like you've got a problem with women, dude.
anon 3:55, uh huh. you'll be surprised to learn that you're a more presumptuous shithead than i am.
Thousands of misogynists the world over all with the same unique quandary: every woman I meet is an ignorant harpy who won't shut her trap or put out. I don't hate women, exactly, it's just that they're biologically inferior and I'm oppressed 'cos I can't say so.
anon 6:23, presume some more.
K. Ass = you + you, again?
you're pretty handy against a straw man. something to be proud of, to be sure.
Rather than quoting Mandy Patinkin, I'm just gonna go ahead and say you don't understand the concept of a straw man, and you should stop embarrassing yourself by continuing to use the phrase incorrectly.
so, just to be clear, who's saying "they're biologically inferior and i'm oppressed 'cos i can't say so"?
i mean, i'm quoting you paraphrasing someone, but who's the someone?
and here i'd thought e.e. cummings died some time ago.
evasion duly noted.
Congratulations. How wonderful.
