I think the charge of hypocrisy is not quite correct. Liberal objections to these sorts of things were always mainly procedural and aesthetic. They didn't like the way Bush went about doing things. It was the way, not the things. Nothing is impermissible as long as the process gives the appearance of being rational and deliberative.

let me be the first to post a ridiculous non sequitur overflowing with machismo
where's the machismo, lol?
Bush and Cheney trampled on the Constitution, but thankfully Obama has more respect for that hallowed document and instead is using it as a weapon.
I think that gets it half right. Plenty of liberals did make a lot of noise about Gitmo back in the Bush era, about the evils of throwing prisoners into a dungeon forever, etc. What's clear, though, is that this was all bullshit. The liberal obsession with electoral politics trumps any kind of principle, real or imagined - and even those liberals who hadn't couched their objections to Bush in terms of "oh, but he made such a MESS of things" happily flipped once it was clear that it would soon be Democrats who would be dropping the bombs and turning the thumbscrews.
just to add to 11:03:
"The poll shows that 53 percent of self-identified liberal Democrats — and 67 percent of moderate or conservative Democrats — support keeping Guantanamo Bay open, even though it emerged as a symbol of the post-Sept. 11 national security policies of President George W. Bush, which many liberals bitterly opposed."
and
"But fully 77 percent of liberal Democrats endorse the use of drones, meaning that Obama is unlikely to suffer any political consequences as a result of his policy in this election year."

It was neither the way nor the things. It was the group. Greenwald has blundered across a truth here, if an obvious one, that people care more about status -- their own, and their group's -- than they do about other things. Stop the presses!

Hmm, who woulda thought ol' Fyodor was makin' a comment on donkles vs publephants when he had Ivan anguish about what Dmitri just went ahead and did cause he considered it just "doin what comes naturally" (well, till the end of the book anyway.)
And of course, we can extend the parallel to Newt:Smerdyakov and Rick:Aloysha ...
Any suggestions for the Grand Inquisitor?
but w. was so gauche. he tried to give angela merkel a back rub. shudder!
the prez of the mormon church?
Perhaps, yet another way of looking at it is to recall the mass protests against the Vietnam War back in the day. These began before Nixon became president. It seems to me that what is permissible is now reliant on which party the mass murderer belongs too. Hasn’t Obummer merely continued with Bush policy including the procedural aspect, in fact expanding it? It’s tribal not reason, and isn’t reason merely a game we play? Rationality was something conceived in the Renaissance which was that if you could do ratios this proved you were rational. Maybe the importance of reason is overrated.
nonny@11:20 -
oooh - good one.
shoulda occurred to me, what with the magic underwear an' all ... very fetish-y and appropriate to what's essentially a BDSM situation ...
nonny@11:20 & EL; Santorum would relish the job even more.
Well, I don't know about you all, but I'm voting for Newt... and that frothy mix guy. They'll make the country all sticky and coherent (as opposed to divided and ambivalent), like Elmer's Glue
Early Monday evening the phone rang
I picked it up. An apparently male voice asked for missus charley, and I said, "She's not here now" - true; in fact, I had hoped it was missus charley calling. But then the fellow asked for me by name, and I replied, "'Tis I" [or words to that effect].
He was calling on behalf of one of the several candidates for the Democratic nomination for Congress running in the April primary to oppose the Republican incumbent in my district, he explained - he was not surprised that I did not know that I had a Republican Congressman - apparently a lot of us who have recently been redistricted from the 4th to the 6th district don't know this. OK, thanks for telling me.
But then the discussion became more fraught, because I said I wasn't going to bother voting for anybody who was pro-war, because, perhaps hyperbolically, I admitted, I regard war as "mass murder." In the November election, for example, there's someone I'm not going to vote for. I even used the phrase "military industrial congressional financial corporate media complex", to make it completely clear to the guy what kind of voter I am.
"And what I want to know is, is your candidate pro-war, or anti-war?"
He hesitated.
At that point I said, "Well, that's clear enough", and thanked him for calling. We cordially ended the conversation.
Great story, bro.
more than anything, it was bush's accent that the left didn't like.
You're onto something, 1:24. The clipped, affectless vowels of Obama evoke no distinct region of this or any country. There's an episode of Modern Family (don't snicker; for a sitcom it's fine) where Sofia Vergara does her imitation of an American accent. There's the current C-in-C.
But now gays can be open as they are being killed for empire. PROGRESSIVE!
Not just gays, fish - tg's also,
In fact, the m->f contingent is considering adopting the slogan
"Give me labia or give me death" ..
Just this morning I was driving behind a mini-SUV that had an Obama sticker on one side and a rainbow-colored peace symbol on the other. I don't know, there must be some kind of degenerative brain disorder that results from too much exposure to meaningless political spectacle.

Coming Summer 2012: A Devastatingly Firm Grasp of the Obvious, by Glenn Greenwald. It'll spend at least 10 months on the best-seller list. Oprah will recommend it heartily; Dr Phil will have at least 1 show that "exemplifies" what Our Constitutional Lawyer's new book describes.
Joe,
I think he was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.
Of course liberals support the presidents terror policies. This is Obama we're talking about, after all. When the man orders a gun to be discharged, it ejects a projectile coated in peace and liberal cosmopolitanism. When his drones fire missiles, their explosions bring not misery, chaos, and savage bursts of pulpy and indiscriminate gore, but rather democracy and freedom. I'll bet he even cums human rights and social justice, thus improving the lives of the sewer people who are left picking through the remnants of his discarded kleenexes.
Stylistic preference isn't the only factor, but it is assuredly among them. I love that President Obama is more like James Bond than wannabe cowboy Bush.
Considering the hyperventilating that pwoggles do over Greenwald, I'm assuming they'd all go into shock if Yves Smith ever got a Salon gig.
They were Nazis, dude?
Weldon- Obama's fans are all too happy to find some difference between his policies and GW's, even if they're only semantic. Let's see how they feel when one of the drone strikes in Pakistan pisses off the wrong people. They has the nukes there. Or maybe Obama will do the complete WTF and try his hand in Syria. Or maybe, just maybe, one of these days Obama will decide to be the guy who ran against all this shit in 2007-8.
karl why you always hate greenwald?
Liberals - shaken, not stirred.

You know, in many ways, your cynic is very close to your stereotypical music snob:
"Oh, you're into Left-Wing Tribalism? Yeah, I was into them before they were cool, back when the first album came out. You know, before they sold out. I guess if you haven't really listened to much I could see why you'd think their new stuff is good, but..."
Never trust a man with gray gums...
The commentors are always a bit behind, nony. IOZ has only fairly recently stopped assaulting Greenwald for agreeing with IOZ. They'll come around.
@IOZ re: "procedural," yeah, that's the stuff. American liberals prefer the sustainable mass death and destruction; when they see someone like Bush, who is so insane and idealistic he might someday paint himself into a corner and stop, they get very worried that the slaughter might peter out. Obama's carefully managed everdeath is infinitely preferable.
Even worse, a genuine emopath like Bush might've pulled a Reagan, start chatting more with the enemy, and break up the entire show. For endless death, you need pure, intelligent evil, not naive, horny evil.
U2's early stuff was the best
A simpler explanation, with abundant evidence to support it, is that Oxtrot is just hopelessly retarded.
come on gals, oxtrot is pretty funny. unlike mr never tell a joke greenwalds.
The only thing funny is that he actually seems genuinely unaware of his own idiocy. That said, I suppose furiously humping Greenwald's leg gives him some sort of reason to get out of bed in the morning.
John:
The what?
He may mean frothy mix as in Santorum. Google it.
Anyone surprised EL is a fan of haw-haw-tranny jokes?
Lissen up now, Nonny @6:06 -
When I night-clerked a the Hildona Court in NYC just down the street from the Camelot on 50th between 8th and 9th, I treated EVERY tranny with complete respect, whether or not she were givin me the usual two bucks per trick door money or not. And there was more than once that vice cops pulled their guns on me - would you fuckin believe it - just because I wouldn't buzz them in so they could make an arrest ..
I was particularly fond of Larry B, aka "Panama", who was workin just to get enough money for an operation that would break her bones and give her the wasp waist she wanted.
So why don't you go take a flying fuck at the moon - you don't know shit about me ...
It was great.
Anyone surprised EL gets more het up and extra weepy about the shitty lot of MtF than that of ciswomen?
Actually noony@5:55, there is a reason why m>f have it worse than vice-versa.
What Panama told me is that just because the doctors tucked his scrotum inside and reduced his joint to a clit didn't mean that they could change his whole orgasmic response system. So unfortunately, he found out that his orgasms were not at all as intense.
Now I myself have experienced non-genital orgasms and I suppose that with enough kundalini or other methodolodgy, Panama could have learned to do so also.
But although I've never spoken to a f->m about the matter, I suspect they don't have the same problem, for obvious reasons.
EL doesn't know what cis means.
Reason transphobia exists and is tolerated? Starts with a "p," fellas.
Yeah because he couldnt google it in 2 seconds, its like a super secret in-crowd wurd. Now shut up you sound like a twit. "P" couldnt google that one Ill assume you mean penis because your a misandryst.
My what is a "misandryst"?
Its the hyp way to say misandrist, like womyn. Its a misspelling you fucking nob.
So, anyway, what of mine is misanthropic or whutever?
demize -
I don't think it's the case that I've offended nonny's sexual politics - I've offended his sense of political correctness.
In his milieu, there are certain things one just doesn't joke about because the pain is just too great.
The asshole should read "The Dance of Genghis Kohn" (or "Cohn"):
http://www.violetbooks.com/REVIEWS/rbadac-gary.html
Kohn's "gesture of defiance" was to drop trou and tell his Nazi executioners to "kish mir in tuchus"
right before they shot him on the edge of a mass grave.
