Codified Likeness Unit

Someone said that Mitt Romney doesn't understand or appeal to women; Mitt Romney said, well, shit, I've got a wife, who's a woman, to tell me what women want, which is The Economy; some Democrat or other said, Ann Romney has never worked a day in her life; and everyone rushed into the gap to explain how this was a terrible gaffe, error, mistake, embarrassment, because 1.) There Is Nothing Wrong with Being a Housewife, and 2.) Being a Housewife Is a Job.

It is the latter point, which went so far, or so deep, as to dredge up a study (apparently annual!) that says Stay-at-Home Moms R Worth A Buck Twelve, to which we turn our attention.  So, here is the first posthuman moment, if you ask me, when the biological species whose awkward form we inherited evolves into something else, après les protéines, moi, composed entirely of billable hours.

I've been told that, although an atheist, I am a religious man.  I accept that.  It seems to me that the majesty of existence is somewhat . . . um, reduced by the evident conviction that there is no activity which cannot be accounted for, literally accounted for, in monetary terms.  Like, euh, you may think I am heartless, but in fact, my first relationship was worth $1.37, so obviously, like not. You do not have to imbue motherhood with any particular mystical earthgoddess hokum to see that its particular value is precisely in its valuelessness; it is an essentially human activity; it is immune to price.  It isn't a fucking job.  It isn't work, although it's labor.  That's not a fucking demerit.

As a merely practical matter, I have a goddamn job; I even sort of like my job, sometimes; it ain't all that bad.  But I'll be doubledamned if I have to start thinking of the feel of the garden soil between my fingers, the sunshine on my face, every kiss and blowjob, the dog curling into the bend of my knee when I take a nap, laughing with my uncles, visiting my parents, hanging out with my cousins, joking with my friends, getting sick and healing and getting well again, feeling sadness and feeling joy, sleeping and waking, breathing and living as quarter-hours on a daily calendar with a wage-rate attached.  "Salary.com says that standing next to your boyfriend at the sink and doing dishes together after the guests have gone home is worth upwards of $25.45/hour, or nearly $30.00/hour if the dishwasher is already full."  No, you fucks, no.  That isn't it at all.

I'm not going to read the article, so can you tell me, does the wife's value include the cost a weekly visit to a hooker? I want to know how much I'm saving by making love for free.

There are far too many confounding variables to make any of these "A wife is worth.." arguments worth much even within the context of making an economics argument. I found my ex-wife to have been worth an actual negative number, but my daughter has been an enormous net positive. You can't explain that!

I've been trying to ascertain whether my voice was a bringer of discord in your commentariat, and so abstaining from raising it, but I'd like to let you know that you're on a roll lately, and as to whether atheism is an impediment to true religion and even eternal life, while I can't say I know the answer, I suspect it mightn't be.

Even the people pushing homo economicus don't believe it is a fully accurate model of humanity. The point of it is not whether it is accurate in predicting how people feel (much less you, a non typical person, feels). It is whether it is accurate in predicting how people act. It is quite good on this latter point (although by no means perfect).

So what is the point of that article you linked? It is indeed an example of the homo economicus mindset, but it is not about money. Rather it is about status: to the economicus, the wage paid in a job is its status. (Which is not bad, as a first approximation.) Thus, the argument is that homemaking really ought to be high status (or higher), since it cashes out rather well.

Thus, the article is a shot in the status war over women's work, which is a subconflict of the culture war. Here's the thing about status: unlike wealth or happiness, status is zero-sum. And it is status, not money, which is what the Rosen gaffe is all about. Rosen wishes to gain more status for women like herself -- women who do things other than motherhood. Thus, she puts down motherhood and its correlates like homemaking. Let illegal immigrants do that stuff.

You might think that the right would fight back by espousing motherhood and homemaking, and putting down women who want to do men's work. But no, of course not; such ideas can be seen only in the fringe right. The mainstream right in America is still liberal, just less so than the left. So, their line coming back is not that women should be mothers, but that women should have choice; and that to make that choice be as unbiased as possible, nobody should ever judge women (i.e. assign status) based on what they do. (Def stupid, that, IMO. But they do not ask me.)

Right on, IOZ, very very true.

It's all in Nicomachean Ethics, actually, over & over again: the lesser acticities are means to ends; the greater activities, the most valuable activities of all, are ends in themselves (i.e., considered in a "billable" aspect, they're completely useless).

I find the meaning in my work to be of value, I wouldn't take a job that paid slightly more if, for instance, that job consisted mainly of senseless paperwork.
I'm a single father. That is immensely meaningful to me as well. But at the end of the day, I have to make allowances for the fact that, despite that meanings value to me, I can't pay the bills with it. Why would it be out of bounds for "some democrat.." to come out and simply say "I was talking about the kind of work
that the gubmint gets payroll taxes from. That's kinds what we need here. Sorry for the confusion"

Wondering why IOZ thinks smelling the roses is comparable to being a housewife -- suspects something to do with bonbons said...

And yet when a dude hasn't got a woman to keep chained to The Home, he'll pay dearly for all these services (maid duty, child care, dick sucking) and probably bitch and moan less. So, yeah, it's unpaid work; room and board in exchange for acting out the mommy role for another adult.

This is the precise argument libertarians trot out when they're arguing against alimony, and the reason why a self-made man is accepted as entirely self-made in the first place.

And do you know what I'm sentimental about? Consciousness. People forget, but there was a time in human history when consciousness was regarded as a natural right practiced by everyone.

Now, if one's sense of consciousness is not essential, then it will be displaced by a holographic construction of selfhood, which rests inside a causal envelope of total certainty that is texture-mapped by cultural forms to create an aura of realism but which realism fails to engage the soul for much the same reason that no one nominates Buzz or Woody for actor of the year.

And I'm a mother.

Proverbs 31

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

people who make FAKE money are just jealous that the bulk of their TIME is spent in alienated toil. child rearing, maintaining and improving one's shelter, preparing and eating food, doing the dishes with a loved one, curling up on the couch with the pets, are priceless. these things are their own reward because they are directly pertinent to settling one's own needs and drives. the spectacle doesn't value people who would rather live directly.

I'm glad that the controversy over Rosen's remarks about Ann Romney led to defenders off Ms./Mrs. Romney to acknowledge that a person may be considered "good" and worthy of respect and honor even if they are not in the paid workforce, or don't have high income. More of that belief/value please.

For instance, maybe people who get laid off during a recession or "downsized" out of a job shouldn't be considered losers who got what they deserved, and companies looking to hire shouldn't automatically exclude anyone who doesn't already have a job.
