Bombs A-gay

So apparently Romney hired A Gay to spout insane shit about Iran, and some Family Research Majority Silent Council Organization of Concerned Women for American Enterprise were like WHOOOAAAAA, buddy; you can't have a gay man mouth bellicose slogans about distant foreign countries.  That would be immoral!  Now one of my nice liberal friends said of this episode that he just can't believe any gay could ever consider himself a Republican after this incident; she was incredulous.  Meanwhile, the moral questions about slaughtering thousands of Iranians for some reason or other remains un-addressed.

Your post title here (Bombs A-Gay) remind me of one of the best bi lingual puns I ever came up with.

At the old Slate I created a poster with the nic:

Enola Gay Avek

She was a borscht belt comedian whose stage name was originally Enola Gay, but whenever she came on stage, the audience would shout:

"Enola, gai avek".

So she said what the hell and changed her name to "Enola Gay Avek".

That way, when the audience would shout:

Enola, gai avek!

she would simply say, "yup ... that's me".

As you well know, IOZ, I'm not referring to that noble Savage who once was wont to gambol nudely and practice body worship and hot oil j.o.'s in North Beach with Allen Ginsberg and Larry Ferlinghetti.

I'm referring to the latter-day Ernst Rohm who is wont to browbeat impressionable teenagers into a morbidly unwholesome preoccupation with questions of sexual identity, or barring that, an outsized, default social reverence for the whole turgid process.

No argument here---teens are indeed preoccupied with sex and sexuality. All the less reason to convert this tender time into something like a mandatory, never-ending sex-scout jamboree, everyone constantly comparing uniforms and badges and marching about portentously, with group hugs and maudlin testimonials by the campfire at night.

I want good friends, a compassionate, discreet love interest, and understanding parents for all teens, to be sure, but Scoutmaster Dan Savage only as a last resort. He'd require individual and group masturbation while demonstrating the same unseemly fervency with which Baden-Powell and his heirs forbade them.

Savage as Rohmesque? Yes, to the extent Savage views sexual categories and identification with a judgemental psychosocial militancy. Come out, come out whatever you are, willya? Heck, a certain kid may well be gay or not gay or whatever else but isn't necesssarily ready or willing to officially don before school, friends, and family---and enemies---the uniform of some sex-identity brownshirt cadre or another, often for a mess of psychical frottage, at the price of being from then on either Weak or Strong, for or against the Cause of Anything (Sexual) Goes, with formal standards and obligations inhering thereto, along with sometimes, perhaps, the fear, shame, or confusion attending not so much the decision to join but the subsequent urge to leave the regiment or the sex-identity validation service altogether.

Sometimes it works in spades, I'm sure, and good on it when it does, but across the spectrum I think Savage's draft 'n conscript methods apply at least as much psychical pressure as they relieve, and cause at least as much psychical brutality and as many suicides as they prevent. It's not recruiting for homosexuality per se, nor innocence that's lost from this oppressive sex-on-the-brain mentorship, as some dumb conservatives assert, but privacy and circumspection, and the relative safety and comfort of indecision or disengagement, however temporary. Sometimes for the teen, invisibility and inocuousness where crucial issues are concerned---being left alone---are as important as public recognition and official designation---the helpful but savage Hand.

Take heart, Inky. When I was growing up in Croton-on-Hudson NY, William Gaddis rented two houses away, before he was recognized.

You will be recognized too, some day, I'm sure of it.

Look what they said of Gaddis' The Recognitions:

I don't know why liberals are shocked by gay Republicans at all (most gay GOP'ers are still rich).

Seeing Inkberrow Godwinning everyone (and with the "pink swastika" myth, of all things) is the height of irony. It's not like the Nazis would have been averse to his skull measuring and racial IQ obsessions.
Granted, he's right about Dan Savage being a creep, but for the wrong reasons. Where he got it in his head that a privileged, wealthy white gay assimilationist like Savage is some sort of militant queer is beyond me.
